Prologue : The Painful Start

"Grandma, do you have to leave me too?" Raven whispered to her grandmother who laid on the brink between life and death. Her quivering hands reached out and covered her grandmother's hand that fed her for most of her life. Doctor had given them the final answer a day ago, Raven wanted to scream at the doctor when he had delivered the news that her grandma would not be able to live more than 24 hours. "Raven, you have to learn to live without me." Her old grandmother replied back in a low, raspy voice and went into a coughing fit soon after. Raven couldn't control the dam of tears and they fell over her fair cheeks in despair. Raven shook her head vigorously in a no. She wouldn't live without her only family, she couldn't! There must be a way! After the death of her parents, grandma Cecilia was the only one Raven called family, her only solace in the world full of paradox. "I won't let anything happen to you, trust me. I will get the best doctor and treat you!" She promised holding the old ladies fragile hand in between her palms. Grandma Cecilia smiled at the young girl who she raised with everything she could afford. She didn't have any regrets in life except one. She was to be blamed for the lie Raven has been living all her life, it was time Raven knew of her family. Her true family. That was all she could do before death came to her with open arms. For the little girl who grew up in her arms as her granddaughter, she deserved to know who her parents were. "Raven, do you remember the old box that I keep hidden in the attic?" "The one that's covered in dust and is gross?" The old lady tried to laugh but her bad condition only brought another fit of cough, concerning Raven even more. "I want you to open it, treasure it. That box has answer to your every question. All the doubts you have been carrying around for years will be cleared." Raven was stunned into silence. Her grandma was at the edge of death and she was concerned over a damn box? Raven didn't want her doubts cleared or her questions answered if it meant she could keep the old lady for a few more years. Raven didn't want to part with her. But even she knew that the time had come and her grandma Cecilia had long ago accepted that fate. "I don't regret keeping you, my darling. You've grown up well. Your mom would be proud of what you have become." "What are you talking about? I haven't even graduated yet." Raven wiped a lone tear that was left on her patchy cheeks. "I love you, my darling.." "I love you more, grandma." With a smile on her face, the old lady closed her eyes peacefully as if falling asleep. An endless sleep that separated her from the world she knew and away from Raven. That night Raven cried herself to sleep. ----------------------------------- Hey Beautiful Readers! I'll update this story three times a week for now!
