Chapter 2: A Complicated Beginning

1041 Words
Eva stood frozen in front of Damien Ryder, her cheeks still burning from embarrassment. It had taken all her willpower not to crumble under the weight of his intense gaze. The man was intimidating, no doubt about it. Everything about him, from the precision of his words to the carefully controlled expression on his face, screamed authority and power. But Eva Sinclair wasn’t one to back down. Not after she had come this far and have so much to lose. She needed this job! She cleared her throat, pride be damned, forcing herself to stand a little taller. “I’ll make sure I never give you a reason to doubt me again, Mr. Ryder.” Damien didn’t respond immediately, and for a moment, Eva thought she saw a flicker of something—amusement, perhaps?—in his eyes, but it was gone before she could be sure. “Good,” he said finally, his voice cool and measured. “You’ll be reporting directly to my assistant, Rana. She’ll guide you through the onboarding process. But make no mistake, Ms. Sinclair,” his eyes met hers once again, “I expect nothing less than excellence.” Eva nodded quickly, biting back a retort. Of course, he expects excellence. The man probably has excellence for breakfast. Damien gestured to the door with a slight nod of his head. “You’re dismissed.” She turned on her heel, eager to escape the suffocating tension in the room, but just as her hand reached for the door handle, his voice stopped her. “And Ms. Sinclair?” She looked over her shoulder, her heart jumping into her throat. “Yes?” He didn’t lift his eyes from the document he was reviewing, but his words were like an arrow aimed directly at her. “You have one chance here. Don’t waste it.” Ouch. It wasn’t exactly a threat, but it wasn’t far from one either. Eva swallowed hard and hurried out of his office, her thoughts racing. She hadn’t even started the job yet, and already the pressure felt immense. As soon as she was in the hallway, she let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. The sleek, modern office now felt like a maze of expectations, and she wondered how long it would take before she felt like she belonged here. “Eva?” She looked up to see a tall woman with sleek, dark hair and sharp features standing a few feet away. Her clothes were impeccably tailored, and she carried herself with the same kind of precision that seemed to define Damien. “I’m Rana,” the woman said with a polite but firm smile. “Mr. Ryder’s assistant.” Eva forced a smile, trying not to show how rattled she felt. “Nice to meet you, Rana.” “I’ll be overseeing your training and orientation for the first few weeks.” Rana’s tone was all business as she handed Eva a sleek tablet. “Here’s your schedule for the week. We start at 9:00 AM sharp every day.” Eva glanced at the screen and saw that her day was already packed with meetings, briefings, and training sessions. So much for easing into the job. “Got it,” she said, hoping her voice sounded more confident than she felt. Rana studied her for a moment, her eyes scanning Eva’s somewhat disheveled appearance. “A word of advice,” she said, her voice dropping slightly. “Mr. Ryder expects perfection. He doesn’t tolerate excuses, and he’s not the forgiving type.” Eva’s stomach flipped. Great. No pressure at all. But before she could respond, Rana gave her a curt nod and started down the hall, leaving Eva to follow. Later That Day By the time Eva made it through her first few hours at Ryder Media, she was already feeling the strain. Everything moved so fast here—meetings, deadlines, expectations. It was like being thrown into the deep end of a pool without knowing how to swim. She had just returned to her desk from a particularly grueling presentation when her phone buzzed. A message from her sister, Natalie. Natalie: How’s the new job going? Did you meet Mr. Big Shot CEO yet? 😏 Eva rolled her eyes at her sister’s nosiness, but a smile tugged at her lips. She quickly typed out a reply. Eva: Yes, I met him. And I almost died from embarrassment. 😩 Natalie: Ooooh, do tell! What happened? Spill all the tea. Eva hesitated for a moment, unsure how much she wanted to reveal. But she figured she could use a little venting after the morning she’d had. Eva: Let’s just say he’s as intimidating as they come. And I may have been late on my first day. 🙈 Natalie: OMG. Eva. Noooooo. Eva: Yeah, he wasn’t thrilled. But I survived, somehow. Natalie: Well, at least you’re still alive. So… is he as hot in person as everyone says? Eva felt her cheeks flush at the memory of Damien’s piercing gaze. She had to admit, he was distractingly attractive. But that was beside the point. Eva: I guess. But he’s also terrifying, so there’s that. Natalie: Sounds like the start of a rom-com to me. 😏 Eva: I’m pretty sure I’m living in a horror movie right now. Natalie sent back a string of laughing emojis, and Eva couldn’t help but chuckle despite herself. Leave it to her sister to find the humor in everything she did wrong. But as the day went on, she couldn’t shake the feeling that this job—this place—was going to challenge her in ways she hadn’t expected. It wasn’t just the work, or the high expectations. It was him. Damien Ryder. There was something about him that got under her skin. The way he looked at her, like he was sizing her up, testing her. And the way his presence seemed to fill the room, leaving no space for doubt. She had no idea how she was going to navigate this, but one thing was certain—she could just feel that her life had just gotten a lot more complicated.
