Eva sat on the park bench, feeling the city pulse around her, but inside, she was numb. Her mind replayed Damien’s face—the way his eyes had softened for that brief second, as if he was ready to let her in, only to shut her out again. It frustrated her how much she cared, how deeply she had already fallen for someone who seemed incapable of showing his feelings. The truth was, Damien had gotten under her skin. She didn’t want to admit it, but no one had ever affected her like this before. His jealousy, the way he had looked at her when Alex got too close—it made her heart race. But what good was all that intensity if Damien couldn’t be honest with her? She wasn’t sure how much longer she could keep waiting for him to figure out his feelings. The sun began to dip lower, casting long shadows across the park. Eva’s phone buzzed again, and this time, she fished it out of her bag, her fingers hesitating before unlocking the screen. A text from Natalie flashed across the screen: "I heard about the café scene. Call me. Now." Eva sighed, rubbing her temples. Of course, Natalie had already heard. She could only imagine the lecture she’d get if she called back. Her sister meant well, but sometimes her constant meddling was exhausting. Natalie always wanted to fix everything, but Eva wasn’t sure even Natalie could untangle this mess between her, Damien, and Alex. Her phone buzzed again, this time a message from Damien. Her heart jumped in her chest, and she opened it with shaky hands. Damien: "We need to talk. Please." The simplicity of the message made her stomach flip. She stared at the screen for a few seconds longer, debating whether she should respond. She wanted to talk to him—wanted to hear him explain, to finally let her into whatever was going on in that complicated heart of his—but the fear of another rejection held her back. Before she could overthink it, her phone buzzed a third time. This time, it was Alex. Alex: "Eva, meet me for drinks tonight? You deserve to relax, and I promise I’ll be on my best behavior 😉" Eva groaned, shaking her head. Could this day get any more complicated? Between Damien’s unreadable emotions and Alex’s easy charm, she felt like she was spinning in circles. She needed to clear her head, figure out what she really wanted before getting caught up in their family drama. Suddenly, a shadow fell across the bench. She looked up, startled, and there was Damien, standing in front of her, his usual guarded expression in place. He must’ve followed her from the café, but how long had he been watching her? "Eva," he said softly, his voice so different from the clipped tone he used at work. It was full of something raw, something she hadn’t heard from him before. "I couldn’t just let you walk away." She swallowed, her throat dry. "Damien, you can’t keep doing this—pulling me in, then pushing me away. It’s not fair." He nodded, as if he already knew what she was going to say. "You’re right. It’s not fair to you. And it’s not fair to me either." His words caught her off guard. He sat down beside her on the bench, his hands resting loosely between his knees, but his body was tense. Eva could see the strain in his shoulders, the internal battle he was fighting. "I care about you, Eva," Damien said, his voice barely above a whisper. "More than I should. But this... this thing between us—it's not simple." "Why does it have to be so complicated?" she asked, her frustration seeping through. "Why can’t you just be honest with me? About how you feel, about what’s going on in your head?" Damien ran a hand through his hair, letting out a long breath. "Because I’m not good at this. Letting people in... it doesn’t come naturally to me." Eva’s chest tightened. She had suspected as much, but hearing him admit it made it real. Damien wasn’t playing games. He was just scared. "And Alex," Damien continued, his jaw tightening at the mention of his brother. "He’s always been the one who can charm his way into anything. But I’m not like him. I don’t... I don’t know how to do that." Eva reached out, gently placing her hand on his. "I don’t need you to be like Alex. I need you to be real with me. That’s all I’ve ever wanted." Damien looked at her, his dark eyes filled with an emotion she couldn’t quite place. Vulnerability? Fear? Whatever it was, it made her heart ache. "I don’t want to lose you to him," Damien admitted, his voice rough. "But I’m afraid if I let you in, you’ll see the parts of me I’m not proud of." Eva squeezed his hand, her frustration melting away as she saw the real Damien—the man behind the walls he had built so carefully. "I don’t want perfect, Damien. I want you. All of you." His eyes softened, and for the first time, he didn’t pull away. Instead, he leaned in closer, his breath warm against her skin. For a heartbeat, the city seemed to fall away, and it was just the two of them, tangled in the intensity of the moment. But just as Damien was about to close the distance between them, a familiar voice called out. "Well, well, well. Isn’t this cozy?" Eva jumped, pulling back as Alex strolled up, his usual grin plastered across his face. He glanced between them, his eyes sparkling with amusement, but there was something deeper there—something that made Eva’s stomach twist. "I knew you couldn’t resist following her, Damien," Alex teased, though his words held an edge. "But you should know, I already asked her out for drinks tonight." Damien’s eyes darkened, his posture stiffening. "This isn’t a competition, Alex." Alex smirked, sliding his hands into his pockets. "Isn’t it? You’ve been trying to keep her at arm’s length, and now you’re suddenly interested? Sounds like a competition to me." Eva stood, her heart pounding in her chest. She couldn’t do this. Not again. "Just stop it! I’m not some trophy you two can fight over," she said, her voice trembling with frustration. "I’m a person, and I deserve better than this." Both men turned to her, their expressions softening at her words. Alex’s grin faded, replaced by a look of genuine remorse, while Damien’s gaze held something closer to regret. "I need time," Eva said, her voice quieter now. "I need to figure out what I really want, and I can’t do that if you two keep pulling me in different directions." Without waiting for a response, she turned and walked away, her heart heavy but resolute. For the first time in a long time, Eva felt like she was finally taking control of her own story. And no matter how this love triangle played out, she knew one thing for certain: she deserved a love that didn’t come with conditions or complications. Whether that meant Damien or Alex—or neither of them—remained to be seen. But for now, she would write her own ending.
