Chapter 15: The Storm Inside

1181 Words
The next few days passed in a daze. The city’s hustle outside her window felt like a distant hum as Eva tried to find normalcy, but every quiet moment was invaded by the memory of Damien’s words—“I’m not going to wait around forever.” There was something final in them, a warning she couldn’t shake. She felt torn, a knot of confusion and emotions twisting tighter with each passing hour. She avoided Alex’s messages. She had too many feelings bottled up, and replying to him felt like betraying something she hadn’t yet named. It was almost unbearable—the indecision, the pressure from Natalie’s lectures, and the looming confrontation with Damien that was sure to come. Friday rolled around quicker than she expected. Eva stood by her office window, staring at the New York skyline that shimmered in the fading light. Damien was right. She couldn’t keep floating between the two of them, caught in the storm of her own indecision. Alex was supposed to be the easy choice, the escape. And yet… all she could think about was Damien. Her phone buzzed again, and her heart leaped. Damien. His name lit up the screen like a beacon, calling her to face what she’d been avoiding. Damien: Can we talk? Eva’s stomach twisted. She had a choice to make, and she knew that deep down, she had already made it. She just wasn’t ready to admit it. Her hands trembled as she typed a quick response. Eva: Tonight? Damien: I’ll pick you up in 20 minutes. She barely had time to change out of her work clothes and fix her hair before there was a knock at the door. Eva took a deep breath, steadying herself as she opened it to find Damien standing there, looking as composed and unreadable as always. But there was something softer in his eyes, something she hadn’t seen before. “Ready?” he asked, his voice low and calm. Eva nodded, grabbing her coat and following him down to the street, where his car was waiting. The drive was quiet, filled with a tension that was palpable but unspoken. The city lights whizzed past them as they headed deeper into Manhattan, but Eva wasn’t paying attention. She was too focused on the growing knot in her chest, the anticipation of what was to come. When they arrived at Damien’s penthouse, Eva felt her heart race. This wasn’t just another conversation—they were stepping into something neither of them could walk back from. The elevator ride up was quiet, but Eva could feel the weight of Damien’s gaze on her. Once inside, the silence between them grew thicker. Damien poured himself a drink, offering her one with a tilt of his glass, but she shook her head. She wasn’t sure she could handle alcohol right now. Her nerves were already frayed to the edge. Damien turned to face her, standing by the bar, his eyes dark and serious. “I’m not good at this, Eva. I’ve always been straightforward in business, in life, but with you…” He trailed off, his voice softer than usual. “You make me forget how to be rational.” Eva swallowed, her throat dry. “You’re not the only one feeling confused.” He took a step toward her, his jaw clenched. “I don’t want to be the reason you’re confused. I want to be the reason you feel sure. But I need to know—are you in this? Because if you are, then I’m in it all the way.” Eva’s breath caught in her throat. His words were so simple, so raw, but they hit her harder than anything she had prepared for. “I don’t know how to feel,” she admitted, her voice trembling. “It’s all too much, Damien. One minute you’re pulling me in, the next you’re pushing me away. And then there’s Alex—” “Alex.” Damien’s face hardened at the mention of his brother’s name. “You think he’s the answer to your confusion? He’s a distraction, Eva. He’ll never give you what you need.” “And what is it that I need, Damien?” she shot back, frustration boiling over. “Because right now, I don’t even know!” He closed the distance between them in a few long strides, his hands cupping her face as he stared into her eyes, his expression fierce and determined. “Me. You need me, Eva. And I need you. Everything else—Alex, your doubts, your fears—it doesn’t matter. What matters is us. And you can’t keep running from that.” Her heart hammered in her chest as his words sank in, each one unraveling the carefully built walls she had constructed. Damien’s intensity was overwhelming, but it wasn’t just passion. It was truth. She could see it in his eyes, feel it in the way his touch sent fire racing through her veins. He wasn’t just pulling her into his world—he was offering her a place in it. “I’m scared,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “I’m scared that I’ll lose myself in this. In you.” Damien’s expression softened, and he dropped his hands to her shoulders, his touch grounding her. “You won’t lose yourself, Eva. I won’t let that happen. But you have to trust me. Trust us.” The vulnerability in his voice shook her to her core. This was a side of Damien no one else saw, a side that he only revealed to her. She realized then that no matter how charming Alex was, no matter how easy it felt to be around him, it wasn’t enough. Alex wasn’t the one who challenged her, who made her feel like her world was spinning out of control and yet somehow more grounded than ever. It was Damien. Without thinking, she closed the remaining distance between them, pressing her lips to his in a kiss that felt both terrifying and inevitable. It was a release of everything she had been holding back—fear, confusion, desire. And as Damien’s arms wrapped around her, pulling her closer, she felt the weight of her decision lift. This was what she wanted. The kiss deepened, and for a moment, the world outside disappeared. It was just them, tangled in each other, the tension between them dissolving into something electric and undeniable. Damien’s hands slid down her back, pulling her closer as if he was afraid she might disappear. When they finally pulled apart, both of them were breathless, their foreheads resting against each other. “Stay,” Damien whispered, his voice rough with emotion. “Stay with me tonight.” Eva nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. She knew there would be consequences to this, that their relationship was about to change in ways she couldn’t predict. But for the first time in a long time, she felt sure. Sure of what she wanted. Sure of who she wanted. And it was Damien.
