Chapter 7 : Torn

717 Words
Eva's heart raced, the sudden shift in the room throwing her emotions into disarray. The charged moment between her and Damien shattered in an instant, replaced by the casual presence of Alex. He leaned against the doorframe, a playful smirk tugging at his lips, completely unaware—or pretending to be—that he'd just walked in on something more than business. "Really, we’re done?" Alex’s tone was light, but there was an unmistakable edge. His eyes flicked to Eva, lingering for a second too long before returning to Damien. The tension in the room surged, silent but suffocating. Damien ignored him, his gaze fixed on Eva. "You can go," he said, his voice distant, as if he hadn’t just laid his emotions bare moments before. Eva hesitated. The room felt too small, too stifling, and Alex’s teasing presence only added to her confusion. She needed air—space to think, to breathe. Without another word, she brushed past Alex, avoiding his curious gaze as she stepped out into the hallway. But the moment the door closed behind her, Eva's mind raced back to Damien’s words, his confession—More than I should. It was there, in his voice, in the way his eyes had softened just for a moment before Alex's arrival turned him cold again. What did he mean? The unspoken tension between them was building, threatening to unravel everything she thought she understood about Damien. He was a contradiction—pushing her away while pulling her closer, warning her about Alex while being cryptic about his own feelings. Eva found herself leaning against the wall, her hands trembling slightly. She closed her eyes, trying to make sense of it all. There was something magnetic about Damien, a pull she couldn’t resist even when she tried. And yet, there was Alex—charming, easy to be around, offering none of the emotional minefield that Damien carried. But even thinking of Alex brought Damien back into her mind, and the cycle of confusion spun on. A door creaked open nearby, and when Eva glanced up, it was Alex again. His grin was gone, replaced by a more serious expression as he strolled over to her. “You okay?” he asked, his voice gentle, surprisingly devoid of the usual playfulness. Eva bit her lip, unsure how to respond. Part of her wanted to throw up her walls, to tell him everything was fine and brush past him like nothing had happened. But another part, a deeper, more vulnerable side of her, felt drawn to the sincerity in his question. “I don’t know,” she finally admitted, her voice quieter than she’d intended. Alex stepped closer, his eyes searching hers. For a moment, they stood in silence, the hum of the office distant and irrelevant. Then, almost imperceptibly, Alex’s hand reached for hers, a light touch on her wrist that sent a shiver down her spine. “You don’t have to get caught up in Damien’s storm,” he said, his voice low and steady. “He’s… well, he’s always been like that. Intense. Complicated.” He smirked, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “I’m not saying I’m any better, but I’m not here to make things harder for you. I just want to make sure you’re okay.” Eva’s heart fluttered at his words, at the warmth of his touch, but she pulled her hand away gently. There was something about his kindness that felt too easy, too light, like a balm she didn’t know she needed. But that didn’t change the fact that Damien had warned her—warned her about Alex, about what might lie beneath his charm. “I appreciate that,” she whispered, stepping back. “But I don’t know if things can be that simple.” Alex’s eyes darkened for a moment, his smile fading into something more unreadable. “Maybe they can’t. But that doesn’t mean we can’t try.” Eva felt a wave of uncertainty crash over her again, the ground beneath her shifting with every interaction. Torn between the heat of Damien’s intensity and the warmth of Alex’s gentleness, she wondered if either brother could offer her what she truly needed. Or if getting involved with either one was a mistake she couldn’t afford to make.
