Chapter 4: A Rival Appears

1631 Words
Friday evening had finally arrived, and she found herself back at the office for a last-minute meeting Rana had scheduled. Exhaustion pulled at her every step, but she was determined to keep her promise to herself—to make this job work, no matter how challenging. As she sat in the small conference room, flipping through some documents, the door suddenly burst open, and in walked a man she had never seen before. He was tall, with unruly dark hair that curled slightly at the ends, and his grin could only be described as mischievous. There was a playful glint in his eyes, one that made Eva’s stomach flip unexpectedly. “Oh, you must be Eva,” the man said, his voice full of humor as he took a seat across from her. “I’ve heard quite a bit about you.” Eva blinked in surprise. “And you are…?” “Alex Ryder,” he said, leaning back in his chair, his smile widening. “Damien’s younger, much more charming brother.” Her mouth fell open slightly. She hadn’t realized Damien had a brother, and certainly not one as… relaxed as this. “I—um, nice to meet you,” she said, trying to recover. “I didn’t know Damien had a sibling working in the company.” “Oh, I don’t work here,” Alex waved off the idea with a casual laugh. “I’m more of a... casual investor. I like to pop in and keep Damien on his toes.” Eva raised an eyebrow. Something told her Alex wasn’t the type to “pop in” without causing some kind of chaos. His mischievious smile was just too obvious and Eva couldn't help but return his smile. “So, Eva,” Alex continued, studying her with those twinkling eyes. “What’s it like working for my stone-cold brother? Is he terrifying you yet?” She laughed nervously, unsure how much she should say. “He’s… intense.” “That’s putting it lightly,” Alex said with a wink. “Don’t worry, though. He’s all bark. Mostly.” Before Eva could respond, the door swung open again, and in walked Damien himself, his expression as unreadable as ever. The air in the room immediately thickened with tension so thick, you could cut it with a knife, and she couldn’t help but notice the stark contrast between the two brothers. Where Alex was playful and light, Damien was dark and commanding. “Alex,” Damien said curtly, his eyes narrowing slightly. “What are you doing here?” Alex grinned, completely unfazed. “Just checking in. You know, making sure everything’s running smoothly.” He turned to Eva. “And I wanted to meet your new employee. She’s quite charming, you know.” Damien’s gaze flicked to Eva for a brief moment before returning to his brother. “You’re interfering. Don't” “I prefer to think of it as adding a little spice to your day,” Alex said with a wink. Eva could feel the tension building between the two brothers and wasn’t sure whether she should step in or quietly slip out the door. It was clear that Alex enjoyed pushing Damien’s buttons, but there was something more beneath their exchange—a subtle undercurrent, just simmering beneath the surface, that perhaps she didn’t yet understand. Damien’s eyes darkened slightly. “Alex, if you’re done playing games, I need to discuss some business matters with Ms. Sinclair.” Alex stood up, his hands raised in mock surrender. “Fine, fine. I’ll leave you to your business.” He gave Eva a playful nod. “We’ll talk again, Eva. Maybe somewhere less… formal.” Before Eva could respond, Alex casually strolled out of the room, leaving behind an awkward silence. Damien’s gaze lingered on the door for a moment before turning to her, his face hard and his expression set in granite. “My brother,” he said, his voice low, “is not to be taken seriously.” Eva wasn’t sure how to respond. “He seems… friendly.” Damien’s jaw tightened slightly, and she got the sense that there was more to the story between the two of them than he was letting on. But before she could probe further, he changed the subject. “Let’s get back to work.” And just like that, the playful, light-hearted atmosphere Alex had brought was gone, replaced by the cold professionalism that always seemed to surround Damien and Eva's plans for a nice quiet lazy Friday night. When Eva got back to work on Monday after an uneventful weekend involving running errands and shopping, the next few days were a whirlwind of work. Eva found herself getting into the rhythm of the job, though it was challenging to keep up with the demands of both Damien and Rana. She still hadn’t quite figured out how to impress Damien, but she was determined to make progress, even if his icy demeanor made it difficult. But it wasn’t just the work that kept her on edge. Alex had been popping into the office more frequently, each time finding an excuse to chat with her. His playful flirting was harmless, but it left her feeling… off-balance. Especially since Damien always seemed to show up moments later, his mood growing darker with each interaction. It was as though the two brothers were locked in a silent competition—one Eva hadn’t asked to be a part of. One evening, after everyone had left the office, Eva found herself staying late to finish a report. The office was eerily quiet, the only sound the tapping of her keyboard. She was so focused on her work that she didn’t notice Damien standing in the doorway until he spoke. “You’re still here.” Eva jumped, her hand flying to her chest. “Mr. Ryder! You scared me.” Damien stepped into the room, his expression unreadable. “I didn’t mean to.” She smiled nervously and gestured to her computer. “I just wanted to finish this report before tomorrow’s meeting.” Damien nodded, but instead of leaving, he walked over to her desk and looked down at her screen. The sudden proximity made her heart race, and she was painfully aware of how close he was standing. “You’re dedicated,” he said quietly, his eyes scanning the report. “I’m just trying to do my best,” she said, her voice softer than she intended. There was a long pause, and for the first time since she’d started working there, Eva felt something shift in the air between them. Damien wasn’t just her intimidating boss anymore. There was something more in the way he looked at her now—something she couldn’t quite define. “I appreciate that,” he said, his voice low, almost gentle. Eva’s breath hitched. She had no idea what to say. His presence was overwhelming, and the way his gaze lingered on her made her feel like the ground was shifting beneath her feet. And then, as quickly as it came, the moment was gone. Damien straightened up and stepped back, his usual composed expression returning. “Don’t stay too late,” he said before turning and walking out of the room, leaving her heart pounding in her chest. The next morning, in the midst of her mum puttering about in the kitchen preparing breakfast for everyone, Eva was still replaying the previous night’s encounter in her head and didn't see the confused look her sister was giving her. Was it just her imagination, or had there been something different in the way Damien had looked at her? Eva quietly sat on the table and didnt hear what her sister was saying. "Sorry, i didnt hear you" Eva muttered absentmindedly. "Do you want to go to the office together since you are up early" Natalie repeated again. "Yes please" Eva replied and quickly shoved some bread and eggs into her mouth. "I am ready to go" she said to Natalie while standing up with her mouth full. Her mom and dad just laughed at her antics. They was just so happy that both girls were working and doing well. They reached office in less than 20 minutes. Eva was still thinking about it while she was entering the office building, but she didn’t have much time to dwell on it, because as soon as she walked into the office, Alex was waiting for her at her desk, his trademark grin in place. “Morning, sunshine,” he said cheerfully. “How’s life working for my brother? Is he being his usual charming self?” Eva groaned, dropping her bag on the floor. “He’s… OK.” Alex laughed. “That’s one way to put it. But don’t worry—I’m here to provide some much-needed fun. How about lunch today? My treat.” Eva hesitated. Alex was fun to be around, but something about the dynamic between him and Damien made her wary. She didn’t want to get caught in the middle of whatever was going on between the two brothers. But before she could decline, Alex leaned in closer, his smile widening. “Come on, Eva. I promise it’ll be the best lunch break you’ve ever had.” Eva couldn’t help but laugh. Alex had that effect on people—it was hard to say no to him. “Okay,” she said finally. “Lunch it is.” Alex clapped his hands together, looking delighted. “Perfect. I’ll pick you up at noon.” As he walked away, Eva couldn’t shake the feeling that she had just crossed some invisible line. And somehow, she knew things were about to get even more complicated.
