The forest thinned as Ariella and Kael approached the foothills leading toward the Temple of First Light. The sky above them shifted from pale blue to soft lavender, dotted with early stars. The air felt cooler, calmer. Almost sacred.
Ariella walked ahead, brushing her fingers along the tall grass. Her mind was heavy with everything she had learned, but her body felt strangely light. Maybe it was the starlight still humming beneath her skin, or the way Kael’s presence beside her steadied her heartbeat without him even saying a word.
Kael was quiet as always, but Ariella could feel his eyes on her. Watching. Protecting. Thinking.
As the sun dipped below the hills, Kael finally spoke.
“Ariella,” he said softly. “We should rest for the night. The temple is still half a day away.”
She nodded. “Here is fine. It feels safer than the forest.”
They found a small clearing at the edge of a stream. Fireflies flickered above the water like glowing dust, and the sky above them was clearer than anywhere Ariella had seen. The stars looked close enough to touch.
Kael set down his pack and lit a small fire. Ariella sat across from him, feeling the warmth of the flames but also the tension between them. A tension that had been growing since the prophecy, since the bond, since the Oracle.
Kael finally broke the silence.
“Are you afraid of me now?”
Ariella’s head snapped up. “What? No. Why would I be?”
“Because of what the Oracle said,” he answered. “Because I am your Guardian. Because our fates are tied. Because you might feel forced into something you did not choose.”
Ariella stood and walked toward the stream, letting the cold water run through her fingers. “Kael…” she said quietly. “I’m overwhelmed. Confused. But afraid of me? No. You’ve saved my life more times than I can count.”
She turned to face him. “The only thing that scares me is losing you.”
Kael froze. His expression shifted, softening and tightening at the same time. Like he wanted to say something, but didn’t know how.
Ariella walked back to him, her heart racing. “You keep acting like you’re a burden. Or like I’d stop needing you. You’re wrong.”
Kael stood slowly. “I have lived my whole life preparing to protect the Starborn heir. But I never expected…” He hesitated, eyes flickering away from hers. “I never expected to feel anything beyond duty.”
Ariella stepped closer. “And what do you feel now?”
Kael looked at her then, really looked at her. His eyes were full of something bright and aching.
“I feel everything,” he said quietly.
Ariella’s breath caught.
Kael continued, voice low. “When you were in danger today, when that hunter struck near you, something inside me broke. It felt like losing the light inside my chest. I cannot explain it. I do not want to.”
Ariella swallowed hard. “Kael…”
He took another step, closing the distance between them. “I am supposed to be your guardian. Nothing more. But every moment with you blurs that line. Every look you give me makes it harder to stay distant.”
Ariella’s heart pounded so loudly she was sure he could hear it.
“I do not want distance,” she whispered.
Kael inhaled sharply, as if her words pulled the air from his lungs. “You are the heir to the throne. The future queen of Lyria. And I am.”
“You are Kael,” she interrupted gently. “The boy who saved me. The boy who risks everything for me. The boy I trust in my life.”
Kael stared at her, his expression conflicted yet full of longing.
The stars above them shimmered brighter, reflecting in the stream behind her. A warm breeze swept through the clearing, carrying starlight like tiny sparks that glowed between them.
Magic stirred in the air, soft and gentle.
Kael reached out slowly, giving her time to pull away. She didn’t. His fingers brushed her cheek, light as a whisper.
Ariella exhaled shakily. “Kael… what are we supposed to do with this?”
His voice dropped to a breath. “Follow it.”
She leaned into his touch, her skin tingling where his hand rested.
Ariella whispered, “Then stop holding back.”
Kael hesitated only for a heartbeat.
Then he pulled her closer.
Their foreheads touched first, their breaths mingling in the cool night air. The moment felt suspended, fragile, too precious to break. Ariella closed her eyes, feeling the warmth of him, the strength beneath his exhaustion, the bond between them thrumming like a heartbeat.
Then Kael tilted her chin gently, and his lips met hers.
It was soft at first. Gentle. Careful. As though he was afraid she might break. But when Ariella’s hands slid up his chest and curled at the back of his neck, Kael deepened the kiss, his arms wrapping around her, pulling her closer still.
Starlight ignited around them.
Literally.
The air lit up with glowing particles that swirled like fireflies as their magic reacted, intertwining in shimmering threads of silver and white. The clearing brightened with an otherworldly light, and the stream reflected their glow like molten stars drifting across the water.
Kael pulled back slightly, breathing unevenly. “Ariella… your magic is responding to me.”
“And yours to mine,” she whispered.
They stood there in the starlit glow, holding each other, knowing something had changed forever.
Something powerful.
Something dangerous.
Something beautiful.
Kael brushed a thumb over her cheek. “This bond… it is stronger than I expected.”
Ariella looked into his eyes. “Does that scare you?”
“Yes,” he said. “Because I would do anything to protect you. Anything. And that kind of devotion…” He paused, voice soft. “It can be used against us.”
Ariella stepped closer, placing her hand over his heart. “Then we protect each other.”
Kael exhaled, as if her words steadied him more than magic ever could. “Together, then.”
She smiled, a soft, uncertain smile, but real. “Always.”
They sat by the fire after, wrapped in silence but no longer distant. Kael stayed close, his shoulder brushing hers. Their fingers
Intertwined without thought. The surrounding glow faded slowly, but the warmth lingered.
Ariella tilted her head back, looking at the stars. They seemed brighter tonight, almost watching.
Kael followed her gaze. “You think they approve?”
“I think,” Ariella said playfully, “that the stars have been rooting for us since the beginning.”
Kael laughed softly, the sound low and warm.
But the peace did not last long.
Across the stream, a ripple of darkness slithered through the shadows. A whisper of cold air swept through the clearing. Kael stiffened instantly, reaching for his sword.
Ariella felt her heart tighten. “Kael… what is that?”
He narrowed his eyes. “Trouble.”
The shadows pulsed again, darker this time. And Ariella felt the unmistakable presence of something watching.
Something powerful.
Something hostile.
Kael stood and pulled her up with him. “Ariella… stay behind me.”
Their moment was over.
The enemy had found their trail.
And the night of starlight and warmth was about to become a nightmare.
