Ariella did not sleep at all after the strange moment she shared with Kael. The forest kept replaying in her mind. His hand on hers. The way the surrounding air shimmered. The colors. The heat. The way her heart reacted was like it had recognized him long before her eyes did.
It made no sense. Yet it felt real.
Morning came too quickly. Ariella washed her face, tied her hair up, and tried to steady her thoughts. She was ready for the day, but something in her felt unfinished. She needed answers, even if she was not sure what questions to ask.
When she stepped outside, Kael was already waiting at the edge of the camp, leaning casually against a tree. The early sunlight caught the angles of his face, making him look almost unreal. He smiled softly when he saw her, like he had been expecting her reaction.
You look rested, he said.
I did not sleep at all, and you know it, Ariella replied with a small glare.
Kael chuckled. Fair enough.
They began walking together toward the path that led deeper into the forest. Ariella noticed him glancing at her more than usual. His steps were quiet, too quiet for a normal person, and she suddenly remembered how he had moved through the forest the night before. Almost like he belonged to it.
Like it listened to him.
Finally, she spoke. Kael… what happened last night?
Kael stopped walking. For a moment, he did not speak. His expression tightened, as if he were trying to choose between telling her the truth or hiding it a little longer.
You felt it, did you not? He asked.
Yes. I want to understand it.
His eyes softened. Then let me show you something. But promise you will not panic.
That is not comforting, Ariella muttered.
He stepped back, lifted his hand, and whispered a word she did not understand. At first, nothing happened. Then the air around his fingers began to glow slowly, gently, like starlight brushing against his skin. The same light she saw last night. The same pulse. The same warmth.
Ariella took a step back. Kael lowered his hand immediately.
I am not going to hurt you, he said. This is just… part of me.
Part of you? Ariella whispered. Kael… what are you?
He exhaled a long breath. You know the stories about the fallen stars of Lyria?
Yes. Every child knows them. The stars that became human and protected the kingdom centuries ago.
Kael nodded. They were called Starborn. And their bloodline did not vanish. It continued quietly, in secret, hidden from the world. Because some see the Starborn as protectors and some see them as weapons.
Ariella’s heart raced. So what are you saying?
Kael met her eyes. I am one of them.
.
Ariella froze. She had always treated the stories as myths. Beautiful, impossible myths. But the light she saw was not a trick. It was real magic. Ancient magic.
And Kael was standing calmly in front of her, as if this revelation should not change everything.
Why did you tell me now? She asked softly.
Because last night… something strange happened. When our hands touched, the magic reacted. It never does that with anyone. Ever.
Ariella swallowed hard. So you think I did something?
Not exactly. But you are connected to this, or to me, in a way I do not understand yet.
She looked away, unsure what to do with that information. She was just a simple girl from a small village. There was nothing special about her… at least she always thought so.
A rustling sound broke the moment. Kael immediately stepped in front of her, tense and alert. Ariella looked around, but she saw no danger.
Stay behind me, Kael whispered.
The bushes parted, and an enormous wolf stepped out. Its fur was black, its eyes glowing faintly purple. Ariella had never seen anything like it. It looked at her first, then at Kael, and let out a deep growl.
Kael moved slowly, his hand twitching slightly as if calling his magic, but he did not attack. Instead, he spoke calmly.
We do not want trouble. Let us pass.
The wolf stepped closer.
Kael raised his voice. I said,"Let us pass."
The creature roared and leaped toward them.
Ariella screamed.
Kael reacted instantly. A burst of light exploded from his palm, throwing the wolf backward with enough force to shake the ground. The creature whimpered, scrambled to its feet, and fled into the forest without looking back.
Ariella stared at Kael. His magic still glowed faintly on his skin.
Kael… you saved me.
Of course, I did, he said simply.
Her heartbeat refused to calm down. First magic, now monsters. The world she knew felt like a shell that was breaking open, revealing something much larger and far more dangerous.
Kael looked at her again. His expression was serious now.
Ariella, listen carefully. Creatures like that only appear when something powerful is moving in the kingdom. Something is waking up. My magic reacting to you… Your presence in the forest… it is not a coincidence.
What are you saying?
I think your life is about to change. And I think our fates are tied together, whether we are ready or not.
Ariella felt a chill run through her. Not from fear, but from the weight of his words. They stood in the middle of the forest, surrounded by silence and fading starlight.
Kael stepped closer, his voice quiet. I can protect you. But you have to trust me.
Ariella hesitated. She barely understood who he truly was. Yet when she looked into his eyes, she did not feel fear. She felt something else. Something warm. Something certain.
I trust you, she said.
Kael’s shoulders relaxed. Good. Then from this moment on… You are not alone. Whatever is coming, we face it together.
Ariella nodded.
And for the first time that day, she understood.
Her life was no longer ordinary.
Her story had already begun to change.
