Chapter 4 He Let Me Die

"I didn't take your documents." Serena answered Vivian's accusation calmly, but Vivian fired back at once. "Then where were you last night if you weren't in your room? Should I pull the security footage?" Serena's heart skipped a beat. The night before, she had left her room for water and lingered outside Adrian's study. If they checked the cameras, they would know she had overheard everything. Her hands clenched at her sides, but she stayed silent. Adrian frowned. "Serena, did you take Vivian's files?" Biting her lip, Serena replied softly, "I don't remember." "Then you did take them." Adrian reached his conclusion without hesitation, his gaze turning cold with disapproval. "You can't remember anything, so why are you touching other people's things? You've always targeted Vivian. Apologize to her. Now." "What good is an apology?" Vivian snapped. "Those files are extremely important! Do you know how much effort I put into my work at the company? If I can't produce a project worth hundreds of millions, Father will tear me apart!" As Vivian vented her anger, Adrian looked at her with unconcealed sympathy. "Don't worry," he said gently. "I'll handle it." Then he turned to Serena. "I remember you worked with Victor on a research project that's about to restart. Give that project to Vivian as compensation. If you can't transfer your shares to her, this will do instead." Serena stared at him in disbelief. That project represented nearly eight years of her life. She had devoted herself to it from before the k********g until now, pouring everything she had into its development. For it, she had filled ten thick volumes with research notes. And now Adrian wanted her to hand it over to Vivian, a woman who knew nothing. But Serena had no choice. If Adrian or Vivian realized her memory was returning, she might never leave this house alive. Swallowing the grief and despair threatening to overwhelm her, Serena forced herself to nod blankly. "All right. I can give it to her, but…" "But what?" Vivian asked immediately. "I don't remember where I put the project documents. I'll have to go to the institute and look for them." If she could find Victor Lane, perhaps there was still hope. "Then Vivian will go with you," Adrian said without pause. "You can introduce her to Victor while you're there." Pain twisted through Serena's chest. Adrian thought of Vivian in everything. Not once did he consider what Serena might feel. Of course he didn't. He had only ever pretended to love her for Vivian's sake. Their so-called childhood bond had been a lie from the beginning. Holding back the tears burning behind her eyes, Serena dug her nails into her palms until they nearly broke skin. "Fine." The moment she agreed, Adrian and Vivian, afraid she might change her mind, immediately ordered the driver to prepare the car. Other than hospital visits, Serena rarely left the villa. She took the front passenger seat and glanced into the rearview mirror. Outside the car, Vivian wrapped herself around Adrian's arm, rose onto her toes, and kissed his cheek. They looked revoltingly sweet together. Bitterness surged through Serena's chest. How had she been blind to something so obvious for so many years? Sensing Adrian's gaze on her, she quickly looked away. When Adrian and Vivian got into the car, Adrian frowned. "Serena, why are you sitting up front? Come sit with me." With no room to refuse, Serena got out and moved to the back seat beside him. Adrian reached over to stroke her hair. She flinched away instinctively. His hand paused in midair. His eyes narrowed. Then he cupped her face anyway, forcing her to accept the touch as he asked in a low voice, "What's gotten into you today? Why do you keep avoiding me?" Serena lowered her eyes and rubbed her temples. "I haven't been sleeping well." "After we leave the institute, I'll take you to the hospital for another checkup," Adrian said without suspicion. "You're almost out of medication anyway. We should get more." Cold fear flooded Serena as a chilling thought struck her: Adrian might have tampered with her medication. Before she could think further, a deafening crash split the air as another vehicle slammed into them from the side, sending their car flipping over in an instant. The world spun violently. Serena's head smashed against the window, and blood streamed down her face. But Adrian never looked at her. Without a moment's hesitation, he threw himself over Vivian and wrapped her tightly in his arms, shielding her with his body. Through blood-blurred vision, Serena watched him force the car door open in panic and carry Vivian out first, never once sparing Serena a glance before darkness swallowed her whole.
