Chapter 7 He Left Me Burning

528 Words
Suspicion filled their eyes as they stared at Serena, and fury made her whole body tremble. In the past, she had tolerated Vivian because her fractured memory left her too uncertain to fight, because she refused to let an illegitimate daughter disrupt her mood, and because she had loved Adrian enough to keep giving in. But she did not love him anymore. Even so, she had no choice but to lower her head. If Adrian discovered the surgery had never happened, he would drag her back into that operating room, and the doctor who helped her would be ruined along with her. With the Foster family now far stronger under the Whitmore family's protection, she had no way to oppose him directly. Taking a slow breath, Serena lowered her gaze. "I just had surgery. If I squat too long, I get dizzy… but if you want me to carry the water, I will." She turned and walked into the bathroom. When the basin finally filled with steaming water, Serena forced herself to lift it despite her trembling arms and carefully carried it back out. She had expected Adrian to still be there. Instead, only Vivian remained, lounging at the bedside with one leg crossed over the other, not a trace of the frail helplessness she had shown in front of Adrian. The moment Vivian saw her, she smirked. "Do it." Before Serena could react, someone slammed hard into her shoulder. Scalding water exploded across her body. A scream ripped from Serena's throat as she crashed to the floor. Her skin blistered instantly, turning red and raw. Nearby, a maid stood frozen with another basin in hand. That was where the boiling water had come from. Vivian had planned every second of it. Serena writhed in agony and tried to crawl toward the bathroom for cold water, but Vivian grabbed her by the hair, dragged her back, and slammed her onto the floor again. "Serena, you're useless to me now anyway, so why not just die? If you die, Adrian will be mine. As long as you live, you're still Mrs. Foster. And I'm sick of it." Vivian grabbed Serena's face, her manicured nails digging into the blistered skin and tearing the burns open. "Ah!" The pain nearly made Serena black out. Then footsteps sounded outside the room. Vivian immediately flung Serena aside and collapsed onto the bed, clutching her own foot as she screamed, "It burns! My leg hurts so much! Adrian, save me!" Adrian burst through the door. The sight turned his eyes bloodshot. Without hesitation, he rushed to Vivian, swept her into his arms, and ran for the door. "Doctor!" he shouted. "Get here now!" Just as he reached the doorway, a weak voice stopped him. "Adrian… save me…" He turned. Serena lay crumpled on the floor, barely conscious, her skin blistered and peeling, her entire body burned beyond recognition. With the last of her strength, she dragged herself forward and clutched his pant leg. "Save me…" Disgust flashed across Adrian's face. He kicked her hard in the shoulder, sending her sprawling across the floor. "If anything happens to Vivian," he snarled, "I'll never forgive you."
