I turned my head. Besides the two of us no one else was in the house. Yet the pat-pat was distinctly fading away towards the door leading to the dining space. I got up and followed the sound. It was becoming clear. Now it sounded from the centre of the dining space. Then it stopped. But very soon it could be heard coming from near the main door. I took the few steps towards the door. And no sooner did I do that than the pat-pat sounded from behind the door. When I flung it open, almost wrenching it off its hinges, a chilly whiff of breeze ran down my body.
