It was the day of prayer meeting for Simran. The seventh day.  Maroon curtains covered the windows. Orange covers draped the sofas. The priest sat on a maroon-coloured silk cushion. A picture of Simran, in a deep blue bikini in the backdrop of the Phuket Island, wearing her happiest smile adorned the wall opposite the main door. Holly lights weaved themselves in and out of the bushes and trees of the lawn. A small stage stood at one end. About fifty people, close friends and relatives, filled the lawn. They were all dressed in colourful clothes. We friends were dressed as usual – in our tattered jeans, sleeveless tees, Ranee and Anais in mini jeans skirts and colourful tops.
