Eyes locked on the distance, Imogen heaved a deep sigh. Her hair spilled across her shoulders—a sign of the burden she carried. Ever since they had both arrived from the human trade auction, he hadn't come inside. She was sure his injury had made him stay away from her.
On second thought, she couldn't stay here anymore. She wasn't the one to be blamed for his wounds and pain. They were killing humans. Going against the rules that guided the whole supernatural world and the human world from attacking each other. They were going against the rules that had ended wars decades ago.
Her palm covered her face. "Why, Dad? Why?" Tears streamed down her eyes. Her whole body shook with tremors as she imagined how fast her life had changed.
Shaking her head, she lifted her gaze, staring at the moonlight streaming through the window. She sat on the bed motionless, dressed in the same shirt as the night before—the big white shirt.
Almost immediately, the door swung open. Blake stepped in. His red eyes glowed through the dark room, casting shadows six steps away from him. He didn't say a word, heading towards the bathroom with slow, deliberate strides.
"I'm sorry," Imogen breathed.
She was torn between apologizing and sitting with the reality. Her mind raced with questions—questions that threatened to swallow her. How does she escape? She had no phone. There was nothing she could use to communicate with Moira. If only there was...
"Selene wants to see you. Get out of this room." His voice was cold.
The sound alone sent shivers down her spine. "Can you just drop the attitude? You killed someone," she snapped, pointing her finger towards the edge of the bed.
He snarled, slamming the door shut. The bang alone made the whole room vibrate. "Get out of this room before I kill you as well." His voice was more like a growl.
Dragging herself out of the bed, a deep realization dawned on her. She had just called him a killer when he hadn't done anything. That wasn't the perfect person she claimed to be. Barefooted, she walked out of the room, shutting the door silently behind her.
In the quiet hallway, her chest heaved. Her eyes slid shut. A single tear rolled down her cheek. She made her way down the quiet walls. The villa seemed to carry her pain with every breath. Her breath was heavy. Lowering her head, she made her way down the stairs.
"You know you've gone too far." Selene's voice echoed through the sitting room. It bounced off the walls, hitting Imogen hard.
"He killed someone," she said, stepping down from the stairs completely.
Selene sighed, sitting on the white couch behind her. "Are you sure about that?"
Imogen strode towards the other silver-white couch in the room. Beside it was a black mini table. She sat, placing her left hand on the table. "Yes."
"It seems you forgot you watched the killing happen on the screen." Her voice was cold.
Blank. Her whole body went cold. That was true. She had seen it all happen on the projected screen. And now she was blaming the Alpha? She shook her head, not wanting to believe what she had just done.
"Look, girl, I know you don't believe everything I've said about my son. And you've made things worse for him." She blurted. "The one speaking to you isn't Blake. It's his wolf. I'm sure a tiny Fae princess wouldn't know about this."
Those words hit hard. Harder than she had thought they would. Imogen wasn't the type to care about what people said because she knew one thing: she had always been right. She made sure of that. And now? She was wrong. She had lied. She had blamed the Alpha Blake for what he hadn't done, pushing him so hard he landed his head first against the wall.
"I didn't know anything."
"Liar." Selene's voice was flat. "You're supposed to be here crying. Begging for forgiveness. Do you know what you did? Do you know the cost of everything you did in just a few seconds?" Her cold voice cracked almost instantly. Her eyes grew glassy.
After losing her own mother, this was the first time Imogen had seen an elderly woman break down because of her child. Her hand twitched—wanting to reach out, to offer something—but she stopped herself. What could she possibly give? She was the cause of this pain. The weight of that realization settled deep in her chest. That was when she knew she had f****d up big time. Although she didn't know if Blake was truly an autist, the pain from Selene was more convincing.
"You knew. Jayden told you he was autistic." She broke completely. "My son was almost taken to that crazy psychiatric hospital, but his wolf saved him. He couldn't face people, but became calm again. And now this? You've just made his health worse."
"I don't know anything about him. He speaks normally. How can you call that an autist? I've seen a lot of autistic humans and children—they don't speak like he does," Imogen said. "You can't even teach your son. Does he think killing is a good thing?"
"Look at me, girl. This isn't your Fae Kingdom. Things work differently here." She said. "As for Blake? You will take on his responsibility from now on. If you can worsen his health, then you can also make him heal. You want to see the reality? Go on. It's yours." Selene stood up, hands in her pockets. "For your information, both of you are getting married by the end of next month."
Imogen blinked, trying to un-hear what she had just heard. It couldn't be true. That was impossible. There was no way she was getting married to an autist. No way. She turned her head slightly, and before she could recover from the shock, Selene was gone.
Right where Selene had stood, Jayden was now standing, staring into her eyes. His lips curved slightly. He looked tiny in the oversized daddy shirt he had worn.
"I can't marry him." Her voice cracked. Out of nowhere, warm tears slowly trickled down her cheeks. The salty water flowed freely towards her tightly pressed lips, seeping through as she tasted the pain of her decision.
"Are you hurt?" Jayden asked.
Although his words held no harm, it felt as if he was mocking her. His words made her chest ache. Her whole body trembled frantically. Her heart was heavy with the pain of her father's decisions.
"You won't understand."
"What did you do to my brother?"
"I did..." She paused. "I don't want to talk about it."
Imogen stood, heading back up the stairs. There was nothing she could do other than escape this place. If she didn't, they were ready to make her a slave, and she couldn't accept that.
Her first step? She needed to understand how she had channeled her energy that afternoon so she would be able to get out of here with ease.
