Her hands clenched tightly at her sides. She gritted her teeth trying to, her eyes flickering. For a moment it was red, and the next it was pure black, and the next, it was multiple back to normal. Her veins popped out in different colours.
Selene leaned backwards, her face was calm. Her rising chest made it evident that she was trying to cover up her fear. She hauled Jayden into her warm embrace. Patting his head, they both stared at each other. With Jayden's expression already sour.
" This is not a place for all of this princess." Selene said, her voice cold. Balanced and intense.
Imogen stared at Jayden slowly letting go of her clenched fist. She couldn't let her emotions overide her. She needed to think this through without making a fuss. She needed to solve this without making herself the villian here.
The fear in Jayden's eyes was more than enough to make her realize that whatever she does wrong will make her the culprit here. And she wouldn't have a chance to prove herself in front of her father.
The question still lied deep in her chest. What made her father betroth her to family that isn't even royal? The question kept racing in her mind. Her chest rose and fell. Waters fragmented at the tip of her lids as she slid her eyes shut, letting out a deep breath.
“ I'm sorry.” She breathed, “ I… I… just didn't know how to react.” Her voice was calm.
Inside her head, that wasn't at all what was happening. She was only trying to give the best Impression. And now, the plan was to run out of this place was night falls. Everywhere will be quiet. And no one would know.
She wasn't ready to betroth her destiny to a man that is autistic. A werewolf at that. The brutal monster that had always been disturbing her own kingdom.
“It's okay.” Selene said, “I am sorry for keeping it from you.” She added, “ My son has been like this for years and there's no one to be by his side. No one ready to be with him because he is autistic.”
Imogen rolled her eyes inwardly. This isn't the time to play the victim. She didn't say a word. Her whole body might be in this room, her mind was not. She wanted to escape no matter what happens.
She picked her phone from her pocket, lifting her eyes. Looking at Selene. “ I need to call someone.” She blurted,
“ Jayden, take her with you.” Selene said, her voice low.
Jayden didn't have the glee he had once possessed. Now he looked scared, and timid. He doesn't want to get killed by a woman who wasn't ready to marry her brother.
Imogen nodded. This was a chance. She sprang up waiting for Jayden to lead the way. As soon as he did, she followed suit. Her steps slow while she walked through the quiet hallway. Filled with roses and flower vases all at each corners.
This was new to her. Werewolves in particular do not like flowers. They often smash it. But, why were they keeping this ones?
“ Will you marry my brother?” Jayden asked, his voice calm.
Imogen stared at him, her was tucked shoulders now slouched as she expressed how stress she was. There was no way she was saying yes to him. A promise was a debt. And she wasn't ready to owe him one.
A low oomph sound escaped her lips. “ I… don't know.” She said, “I might, eventually.”
“ I would be happy if you do.” Jayden said, “ My brother would finally have someone to play with. You are a lovely person.”
He came to a halt in front of a balcony door. Looking right into her eyes. He wanted something. And he had expressed what he wanted from her; marrying his brother.
As a person who loved and cherished kids a lot she doesn't want to break his heart. And she doesn't want to lose her happiness. The stupid Alpha spent the whole drive in silence without even speaking to her. And now, his brother wanted her to marry him? The mix was crazy.
“ You won't understandー”
“ Promise me.” Jayden said, “ Promise you would marry my brother.”
Imogen lifted her eyebrows. Her whole body stiffened. As a fae, it was against the rule to make a promise and not fulfill it. And now, she was being forced into one.
“ I need to make a call, Jay.” She said, stepping into the balcony.
Her thumbs flew across the keys on her phone. She dialed Moira's number. Tears threatening to fall off her eyes. But, she held it back. Nothing would make her cry. Not at this point.
As strong as she was, her happiness was about to be taken from her. And she couldn't fight against the whole world for it. She couldn't even speak against it. And now, she was facing the pain.
“ Hello, Moira?” She said as soon as Moira answered the call.
“ Yes,” Moira answered. “ Have you gotten there? How is the place?”
“ They are not a royal family. And the man. He is autistic.” Imogen's voice trembled,
Despite being enemies, Moira was the only one she could relay her pain to. And that was the biggest pain she could ever face in life. It hurts when the only person to pacify you was your enemy.
Across the phone, Imogen could hear a subtle squeal from Moira. But, she doubted it. There was no way she had heard it right.
“ This is bad.” Moira said, “ How do we get you out of there?”
“ Don't worry. Bring the car and wait for me outside the kingdom. I will be there by nightfall.” She whispered,
Almost immediately, the call ended. Instinctively, she let out a sigh of relief, clutching the phone tightly as she stared at the dark sky. She escapes tonight and there was no one to stop her.
“ Are you leaving tonight?” Jayden asked,
She turned, staring down at him. Beads of sweat cuddled up around her face despite the chill weather. She couldn't promise something she wouldn't fulfill. It was against the rules. And she might lose her powers temporarily if she does. And now this young boy was forcing her to do it.
She walked past him. Pain evident in her eyes. There was nothing she could do. The pain she was feeling and would go through in the future was nothing compared to destroying her own uprighteousness. Her virtues. Everything she believed. And the kid in front of her.
She strode out of the balcony, her baggy jeans added more weight to here pain as itt suddenly became heavy. Heavier than she thought.
Right at the edge of the hallway, she sighted him. He was staring. Hands crossed above his chest. A dominant look, but something else was more glaring. The pain in his eyes. He seemed to understand what she was trying to do.
Behind her, Jayden stared at them. The way they both looked at each other. His once soury expression replaced with a smile immediately. He wore it like a mask as he sprinted across the room towards his brother.
Imogen watched as a smile appeared across his face. The fear he had once possessed dissolved almost instantly. She tilted her head trying to understand what was actually happening.
This was the same man that had been quiet ever since the drive. The same man that stared at her with a cold intent. And now, he was smiling? He didn't stand there. He turned around leaving her alone in the quiet hallway.
She sighed, turning on her phone. It was 4:30pm. Maybe this was the best opportunity to make a move afterall. There was no one watching anyway, and to top it all she wouldn't be spending the long hours in this place that had suddenly became a boredom within the few minutes she had stepped foot in here.
She turned around, her eyes danced through the hallway. She scanned the floor, her ears perked up as she tried listened to any footsteps, but there was none.
The hallway was eerily quiet as she made her way down towards the same route she had followed. Every turns felt familiar. Every steps she took were easy. She navigated the whole thing easily.
A smile appeared across her face as she saw the familiar stair case again. Now it was time to get out of this pack for good.
“ I will make sure father pay for everything he had done.” She mumbled to herself, “ This place has no guards at all. How dumb are they?” She mutttered to herself.
There was no one to stop her so she could speak and murmur as she wants. She darted towards the stairs. Her steps slow as she walked majestically.
A smile tugged across her lips. She she got down from the stairs real quick, and that was when she realised something she hadn't noticed ever since.
The hallway was the same as the one she had left. The balcony where she had made call was now in front of her.
She turned her head to check the stairs. Surprisingly, it was gone. No stairs anymore.
“ What?”
