Without holding back, I asked Lucas why he rejected me years ago because it had been a question that had been lingering in my head for the eight years that I spent away from Westwood.
He began to tell me that he didn’t reject me because of lack of love, but for the safety of our loved knowledge and our entire pack.
He spoke of an ancient prophecy that his parents had told him about our union that would trigger a catastrophic war between their rival werewolf pack. He said the vision foretold devastating consequences, including the loss of innocent lives and the destruction of everything that they held dear. He said he had to make the heartbreaking choice to reject me to prevent the prophecy from coming true.
I was surprised by this revelation because all I had thought all through these years was that he rejected me because I gave myself to him before getting married, but now this changes everything.
As he continued, he mentioned that it was years into his marriage with Celeste, that his mother on her death bed told him that the prophecy was a farce, that she and his father made it up just to make sure he left me and married Celeste.
I was so angry at his parents, but I couldn’t show my anger to him because his parents were no longer alive.
“That’s a lot to take in, to be honest. So, you rejected me because of a farce prophesy that your parents told you about?” I said. “Why didn’t you think of telling me?” I asked him, wondering why he preferred to keep it a secret instead of telling me back then.
“I didn’t want to tell you because I knew you would have come up with something to go around the prophecy and I didn’t want that” he replied.
Well, he was right, back then I would have done everything possible just to make sure we remained together. There was this awkward silence between Lucas and I. We just stared into each other’s eyes.
“Dinner is ready” Selene called out, breaking out the silence.
“Sure, we’ll be there in a minute,” I replied to Selene.
Dinner started by being quiet. I didn’t know what was going through Lucas’ mind, but I sure knew what went through mine. I started imagining an alternate past with Lucas, a past where Lucas’ parents didn’t lie to him and made him reject me. A past where I raised my triplets with their father and we were all a happy family.
“This could have been my story if not for Lucas’ parents,” I said to myself.
“Did you hear me, Aurora?” Selene said while snapping her fingers to get my attention. “Hear what?” I replied.
“Lucas said tomorrow we’ll all go and put out flyers in the entire Westwood, starting from our pack down to other packs in the town”, Selene replied.
The plan sounded okay, but I had to ask Lucas what made him think the children would be in Westwood. After all, they got kidn*pped back in New York. He explained to me that firstly I had no enemies in New York and if it was a random kidnap, I would have gotten a call demanding a ransom. Since I hadn’t gotten any of that, it was assumed that it was someone from Westwood that kidn*pped the kids.
Selene offered to go to Mr Jacob the printer’s shop to help with the printing of the flyers. “I’ll pass a message to all the Alphas in the whole of Westwood that my children are missing and they should help me keep an eye out if they see or hear anything,” Lucas added.
“Did he just say my children? That was the first time I had ever heard him acknowledging the kids,” I said to myself. I was so happy to hear Lucas referring to the triplets as his kids.
We were still discussing our movement for the next day when Lucas received a call from Celeste telling him to come home that it was urgent. Lucas apologized for leaving this early and promised he'd come the next day first thing in the morning. He hugged me and told Selene goodbye, then took his leave.
Selene caught me still staring at the door even after Lucas had left.
“Hello? Earth to Aurora,” she said while snapping her fingers yet again to get my attention.
“Yes, Selene. What is it?” I said, still smiling sheepishly since Lucas had left.
“Why are you smiling like that? I hope you’re not falling for Lucas again. Remember what he did. Don’t let the fact that he’s helping you search for the triplets make you forget what he did,” she said.
“It’s not what you think, Selene, he explained everything to me”, I tried explaining to Selene. I told her about the whole false ancient prophecy and how Lucas rejected me to protect the people of Westwood and how he married Celeste because of their parents.
Selene didn’t want to believe what Lucas said because she saw how hurt I had been over the years and she didn’t want me to go through the same thing all over again. At the same time, she didn’t want to seem dismissive, so she just told me to be careful and not put my whole heart into believing Lucas.
She then picked up her bag to go to Mr. Jacob’s Shop concerning the flyers. I told her goodbye while I locked the door behind her.
It wasn’t up to twenty minutes since she left that the doorbell rang.
“Oh Selene, what did you forget this time?” I said on my way to open the door.
To my greatest surprise, it wasn’t Selene but Celeste. “Celeste?? what is she doing here?” I asked myself.
With a wicked smile on her face, she asked me if she could come in and I told her that she could come in. All I could think about at that moment was what Celeste could possibly be doing at my place by this time.
