William POV
After the engagement I decided to look for Maya because I invited her to this party thinking maybe it was one of my father's party, that maybe during the middle of the party we could go somewhere private but the sneaky bastard had planned a motherfucking engagement, scanning the place I saw her at a corner staring at Elena if looks could kill she would be unalived by now, shortly after I saw her walk off to the front porch following her closely I caught up with her and dragged her to my viewing room
" Baby look I know you must be livid right now, but I promise you I didn't know anything prior to this engagement" I tried reasoning with her as I saw her eye glistening from tears
" But you still engaged her, look it is alright it's not like we would get married or something" she said as she forced my hands off her
" no no please don't say that you know that, I love you but this is a political alliance, I didn't even know Elena except only few times we met"
" Williams I know that but I don't want to involve myself with all of these drama, I just can't" She told trying to leave
" Look I know you don't mean any of that, I will find a way out of this" I begin, my voice echoing in the silence of the room. She turns to face me, her eyes filled with a storm of emotions.
She crosses her arms over her chest, her gaze hardening. “So, what now, William? Are you going to marry her?”
I shake my head, stepping closer to her. “Maya, I love you. I don’t want to lose you over a decision I didn’t make.”
Her eyes soften slightly, but she remains silent. I reach out, taking her hands in mine. “I promise you, Maya, I will find a way to fix this. Please, don’t give up on us.”
The room falls silent as I wait for her response, the tension hanging heavy in the air.
" Do you promise?" Her gaze softened
" Yes I promise" I sighed as I leaned in to kiss her, with her responding making me instantly hard
Just as i was about to take it to the next level, the door to the viewing room swings open, and my cousin barges in. “William, there you are! The guests are asking for you,” he says, oblivious to the tension in the room.
I sigh, giving Maya a pleading look before turning to leave the room. As I walk out, I can’t help but wonder if I’ve just lost the woman I love.
As the party continues, I, find myself mingling with the guests. I exchange pleasantries, share a few laughs, and even manage to enjoy myself despite the turmoil in my heart. The grandeur of the Duke’s mansion, the lively music, and the cheerful chatter create a festive atmosphere that’s hard to resist.
As the night draws to a close, Elena’s parents approach me. They’re beaming, their eyes sparkling with joy. “Congratulations, William,” Elena’s mother says, her voice filled with warmth. “We couldn’t have asked for a better match for our Elena.”
I smile, thanking them for their kind words. Elena, standing next to me, looks radiant. Her eyes meet mine, and for a moment, everything else fades away. It’s just the two of us, lost in our own world.
My father joins us, his face reflecting the same joy and pride. “Well done, son,” he says, clapping me on the back. “You’ve made us all very proud.”
As the party ends and the guests start to leave, I can’t help but feel a sense of dread. The reality of the situation is starting to sink in. But for now, I put on a brave face, promising myself that I’ll do whatever it takes to make things right.
Elena's POV
As I retreat to the sanctuary of my room after the party, I can’t help but feel a whirlwind of emotions. The night’s events replay in my mind as I begin to undress, the weight of the diamond engagement ring on my finger feeling foreign and unwelcome.
Suddenly, there’s a knock on the door. “Come in,” I call out, hastily pulling on a robe. The door opens, and William steps in. His usual warm smile is replaced with a cold, stern expression.
“Elena,” he begins, his voice devoid of its usual warmth. “I need you to understand something.”
I raise an eyebrow, waiting for him to continue. He takes a deep breath, his gaze meeting mine. “Don’t expect any romantic affection from me during our engagement,” he says, his tone icy.
I blink, taken aback by his words. But before I can respond, he continues. “I will find a way to break this engagement without causing a scandal.”
His words hang in the air between us, creating a palpable tension. I watch as he turns around and leaves the room, leaving me alone with my thoughts and the heavy silence.
After William leaves, I am left alone in the silence of my room. His words, cold and final, hang in the air, creating a chill that even the warmth of the room can’t dispel. I stand there for a moment, letting his words sink in, before moving to the window.
I pull back the heavy drapes, revealing the moonlit landscape outside. The gardens, usually a source of joy and tranquility, now seem distant and uninviting. I lean against the window frame, my mind racing with thoughts and questions.
I glance at the engagement ring on my finger, its sparkle seeming dull and lifeless now. With a sigh, I remove it, placing it carefully on the dressing table. It feels like a weight has been lifted off my finger, but my heart remains heavy.
I then move to the plush armchair in the corner of the room, sinking into its comforting embrace. I sit there, lost in thought, replaying the evening’s events over and over in my mind. As the hours pass, I find myself grappling with a mix of emotions - confusion, anger, disappointment, and a strange sense of relief.
As dawn breaks, I finally drift off to sleep, the first rays of the sun casting long shadows in the room. The engagement party, the surprise announcement, William’s cold words - they all seem like a distant dream now. But the engagement ring on the dressing table, glinting in the morning light, is a stark reminder of the reality I now face.
