POV: Roman
Alpha Elijah leads the pack to a secluded cluster of houses that will be given to the Queen Alpha once she rises. I trot beside my sister's brown wolf. As we reach the gathering, Max starts getting jittery. Nova is here. I can smell her. Why is our mate at a pack gathering? He asks. I lift my head and sniff the air. Sure enough, Nova's apples and cinnamon scent lingers strong in the air. I whine and Aymara nudges me. What is wrong brother? She asks, opening our mind link. I huff. Nova is here. Max and I smelled her as soon as we crossed into no mans land, I tell her. Aymara sighs and shakes her head. Roman, you must remember that her aunt and uncle are wolves. Maybe she came along with them. I look at her and give her a wolfish smile. She was probably right.
At the edge of the houses, a black wolf stands guard to the entrance of the gathering. My pack shifts back to humans as does the guard. "Which pack are you and how many wolves are in your group?" The man asks. alpha Elijah steps forward. "We are the Scarlet Moon pack and there are ten of us in attendance," he says. The guard steps aside with a small bow. "Welcome, Alpha Elijah. You are the last pack to arrive," the guard tells us. My pack mates and I all step past the guard and head to the gathering area. I look everywhere for Nova, but don't see her.
As I look around, I notice that most of the packs keep to themselves instead of trying to mingle and get along. I see children running around, playing a game. I spot Bean, Nova's cousin among the children. Jogging to catch up with him, I tap his shoulder. He turns around and smiles up at me. "Nova's mate. I told mama there was no reason to be suspicious of you. Which pack are you from?" He asks. I look at him in shock. "How did you know I was Nova's mate. The only people that know is my alpha and my sister. Where is Nova?" I ask, looking around again. Bean smiles and puts a finger to his lips. "I cannot tell you where she is. I can tell you that my gift is discernment and futures. When I saw you two together yesterday, I saw the red cords of fate wrapped around you both. Nova should be coming out soon," he says, turning to join the rest of the kids in their game.
I walk back to my pack and slump into a chair beside my best friend, Onyx. "This party blows," he whispers in my ear. I chuckle. "Have you seen the Queen Alpha yet?" I ask. Onyx shakes his head. "Nah man. No one has seen her yet. She's being kept in the pack house until it is time for her to come into power," he tells me, pointing towards the largest house. As I look at the house, I realize Nova's scent is coming from that direction. Max, I think Nova is in the pack house with the Queen Alpha and the alphas, I tell my wolf. Max becomes restless. Danger Roman. Our mate being surrounded by wolves is dangerous. We need to get her out of there. I stand up and start walking towards the pack house.
Before I can enter the house, I hear a low growl behind me. "You cannot go in there," a woman says, stepping out of the shadows. I take a step back but then square my shoulders. "My mate is in here. I can smell her and my wolf is very anxious to find her," I tell the woman. The woman looks me up and down. "There are only two women in this house. One of them already has a mate. Are you telling me you are the Queen Alpha's mate?" She asks me. My eyes go wide. The woman laughs. "Go sit down with your pack kid. If you truly are the mate of our Queen alpha, she will come to you once she is awakened," the woman says, pushing me back towards the rest of the wolves. I trudge back to my seat and sigh. This party does blow, I think to myself.
A commotion at the front of the gathering makes me lift my head up and I about fall out of my chair. Nova is standing among the alphas in the black dress her aunt gave her, looking authoritative and beautiful. "Our queen alpha has been asleep for eighteen years. Tonight, under the full moon, she shall awaken and come into her power," Alpha Elijah says. He leads Nova to the ceremonial circle and leaves her in the middle. The rest of the alphas stand around her on the outside of the circle. A witch steps into the circle and gently lifts Nova's arm up. On Nova's arm is a bracelet I don't remember seeing before. "Once I remove this bracelet, you will begin to awaken. You will go through extreme pain as your wolf comes forth for the first time. Are you ready?" The witch asks Nova. Nova gives a small nod and closes her eyes.
The witch places her fingers on the bracelet and begins a small chant. Slowly, the bracelet cracks and turns the dust. Nova immediately begins to scream and falls to the ground. I stand and move closer to the circle. Nova arches her back and lets out a blood curdling scream and her bones shift and she begins to change. Fire erupts from her skin making the packs start muttering uneasily. Soon enough, a large silver with flaming fur stands where Nova once was. The alphas turn to Em, Nova's aunt, in anger. "What is the meaning of this? No wolf I have ever seen has fire in their fur? What is she?" Alpha Grayson asks. Nova's aunt looks at the alphas. "Nova is the descendant of the King Alpha and the phoenix. They hid her true self till her eighteenth birthday in order to hide her from the beta that killed her parents," she explains.
Nova looks around at the packs and gives a low growl. Without wanting him to, Max takes over and I shift. I look around and every werewolf has shifted and is now cowering on the ground, even the alphas. Nova looks around and her eyes land on me. She steps out of the circle and heads towards me, the flames in her fur dying, until she stands before me. She begins to shift back and I do the same. She throws her arms around me. "My mate," she growls. I wrap my arms around her and lifts her up. One by one, wolves begin to shift back and bow low to Nova. Nova's aunt runs over to us and kisses Nova's head. "I am so proud of you. I wish your parents were here to see you now. Your wolf is beautiful," she says, a single tear falling from her eye.
