POV: Moses
Moses looked at his alpha sideways while they were trying to find the Luna's car.
"His mate is human?" He thought to himself.
It wasn't unheard of, but it was really unusual and it nearly never happened with an alpha. Moses was puzzled.
The alpha's mates are normally strong she-wolves, capable of leading the pack and to put up a fight if necessary. Why would the Goddess have given the alpha a weak mate? He didn't understand.
As he watched his alpha gulping in the sight of his mate, Moses decided it wasn't his place to question the Goddess. If she picked this mate for him, she must have had a good reason.
"I can't smell her car anywhere", a growl escaped the alpha's throat in frustration. "And we're not exactly a normal sight as well, 2 men walking around with an unconscious woman in her underwear in their arms. We need to get out of here."
"Maybe she came by taxi", Moses offered. "You should check her pockets to find a piece of ID. We could be able to locate her house that way." There was no way he would even think about touching the Luna without explicit permission. The state the alpha was in right now, unexpectedly trying to touch her could just as well cost him a body part. And although werewolves healed fast, he'd rather keep all of them.
"Good thinking" the alpha said. And carefully put the woman down on a bench to check her pockets. With tender gestures, he glided his hands over her trouser pockets, almost as if he was caressing her.
Moses was puzzled. "The mate bond was unmistakable, that much was clear. But how could there be a mate bond, if she didn't have a wolf?"
The alpha plucked a bus pass out of a pocket. The address stated on it, pointed to a neighborhood at quite a distance from here. And although it wasn't run down completely, it wasn't a high standard neighborhood as well.
"Another oddity" Moses thought. Alpha mates are usually from rich families, old money so to say. This woman didn't seem to have that background as well. What the h#ll was going on here?
He decided to not question the situation too much and stand by his alpha the best way he could, as he always did. So he said: "Stay here, I'll get the car" and started off towards where they were parked.
"Thanks" he heard his alpha say. But the way he said it, touched Moses' soul. He knew that from this day on, he would have 2 to protect with his life.
And he would.
Driving towards the woman's house, Moses glanced in the rearview mirror from time to time. He could see the alpha had taken his jacket off and covered the woman with it. No doubt to surround her with his smell while keeping her warm. He was holding her tenderly but firm as well, as if he was afraid she might suddenly jump off and make a run for it. Moses didn't think that was about to happen. Because although she was showing signs of fighting off the drug they gave to her, she was still deep under. "How long does it take for humans to recover anyway?" He thought to himself. He never had to ask that question and consequentially didn't know the answer to it.
Together with the bus pass, they found a set of keys as well. Moses realized with some relief that there was no car-key attached to the set, which spared them a nightly drive back with a search for the parked car. But as the keyholder, some purple feathery thing, didn't mention a flat number, they had to go by smell to find the right flat.
After riding the elevator up and down a few times, they found that her smell was the strongest on the fourth floor. Peering down the corridor before getting out of the elevator, they silently walked by every door, sniffing the air in order to find the flat that was hers. It was number 413.
The third key seemed to fit. Carefully sniffing for other occupants, they stepped in, still carrying the woman.
No other smells but hers could be detected, not even from a dog or cat, so Moses turned on the light and looked around.
The flat was small. And although it was decorated tastefully, there was only a very small amount of luxury there.
As they continued to what was probably the bedroom (there were only 2 doors and one of them smelled like shower products), Moses took a minute to take in the rest of the surroundings. Everything seemed to be in order, but something felt off.
Looking around, he realized that this home felt ... empty. There were no pictures, the decoration was minimal, nothing was personal. "This is a house", he thought to himself, "not a home".
When he arrived at the bedroom, he watched how his alpha put the woman down on the bed softly. He made sure she was comfortable and warm, checking her pillow and covering her with a blanket.
Moses averted his eyes when the alpha bent over her, stroked her hair out of her face and gently kissed her on the forehead. "My name is Markus", he whispered softly. "Sleep now, my love. I'll see you soon".
They left quickly and quietly, putting the woman's keys in the bowl next to the door, so she would find them easily.
After closing the front door behind them and making sure it was locked, Markus looked at Moses with a dark look in his eyes.
"Her name is Barbara" he said, "And I can't leave her".
