I was curious about what Callista was about to say to Gideon, but Malea’s urgent need to talk to me was a great way to get her away from the discussion. I doubt Gideon was in any way happy about her father, but she didn’t have to hear that, at least not at this age.
We continued walking with me, simply following Malea. She held my hand while her other embraced the doll she always carried around wherever she went.
We ended up in the park. The sun was already up, so I chose a place with shade, and we sat together.
“Do you want some ice cream?” I asked as I saw a vendor nearby. Our last meal together was quite awkward because of Gideon’s reaction to her father, but I remember she said she liked ice cream.
“Can I eat one?” She threw the question back with curiosity.
I quickly nodded
