VICTIMS OF THE PACK

KARA I barely trust my senses, knowing they’re much weaker than others, but not with Alpha Dominic. Whenever I was with him, I felt my senses being heightened. It’s incomparable even to what I feel during the full moon. I’m starting to wonder how it would be for the next full moon tomorrow, but I doubt he’ll like to spend it with me. I wasn’t keeping my hopes up. My mind wandered while I took a walk in the pack house. I’ve managed to convince Lucy not to follow me around, reassuring her that I’ll be okay and she won’t get punished because I tried escaping. I just wanted some time alone to process not my emotions but Dominic’s. Right now, I could still feel his agitation. Whatever happened earlier got into him. It wasn’t just anger. It’s a huge mix of emotions I usually feel whenever I see Ruis. That alone proves that it was something terrible. I sat by the chairs available by the gardens, clamping on my stomach as I suddenly felt a sharp pain. This is one of the downsides of the mate bond. We could feel their intense emotions, and I was starting to get physically affected by Dominic’s emotions. It’s like there’s this gnawing pit in the depths of my stomach, a churning reminder of all those emotions he’s been trying to hide or couldn’t process properly. It hurt so bad, but I didn’t say a word and endured it alone. I closed my eyes, trying so hard to keep myself together. The pain echoed bitterly in return. What exactly happened earlier? “Luna? Are you alright?” My eyes shot open after hearing a familiar voice. I raised my head and found Arman looking at me with concern in his eyes. His arm was also wrapped in a bandage. “Beta, were you with the alpha when he went out?” I asked instead of answering his question. He gave a slight nod, “I was, but are you okay? You look like you’re in pain. You’re quite pale, too. I should call the doctor to have you checked.” I pulled him out of panic, and he ended up sitting beside me. “Please don’t call anyone. I’m fine, but can I ask a question?” I insisted and asked. The immense pain subsided, but it still lingers. I ignored the pain and waited for his response. Arman nodded reluctantly. I’m sure he’s already weirded out by my actions, but I don’t really care. “You’re stronger than I expected… Anyway, yes, of course. What is it that you wanted to know?” “Earlier, the alpha came back heavily wounded. What happened to him? Please tell me.” His eyes widened for a second before quickly composing himself. “I think you should ask Alpha Dominic yourself about that. Actually, I suddenly remember that I have to meet with the other betas. I’ll take my leave.” Arman rushed away from me, but I chased him and blocked his way. “Please tell me.” I didn’t want to sound this desperate, but I wanted to help Dominic somehow. I’m also sure that he’s just trying to avoid the question. “Luna Kara, please…” He trailed off, realizing I won’t leave him alone until he fessed up. Arman gestured for me to follow him. We walked until we reached the woods, far enough to make sure that no one was around to hear us. “I have good reasons why I wanted to know. I promise I won’t tell anyone else.” I spoke after seeing more indecisiveness in his eyes. He avoided my gaze. “There’s too much that happened while we were out. It’s customary for new alphas to visit existing pack allies, but it didn’t go that well. After that, one of the guards with us brought a kid from that pack. It turned out that it was his child, and the boy really wanted to spend time with his father. Alpha Dominic didn’t look pleased that there was a child with us, but the father pleaded to let the child go with us. After confirming that the child wasn’t kidn*pped or anything, we eventually let the child go back with us. On our way back, rogues cornered and hijacked us.” My eyes widened. So the injuries were from rogues, but that doesn’t really explain why he’s hurting this much. Arman growled in annoyance, not at me but because of remembering what occurred. “We could have easily beaten them, but one of the rogues captured the child with us. We couldn’t fight back, knowing that they wouldn’t blink, killing the child. We had no choice but to follow them until we had the chance to snatch the child away. Alpha Dominic quietly followed all of their demands. They could have just requested for money, but those bastards wanted to feel superior and all. They tied him up, cut and stabbed him. They did the same to us, but the alpha received the most damage. Still, they weren’t satisfied and removed his mask.” I gasped, already putting pieces together. “Behind his mask…” He trailed off, assessing whether to tell me or not. “I already saw what was behind his mask. You didn’t have to elaborate.” I responded, knowing it was bothering him. His eyes widened. There were questions in his eyes, but I don’t think he will ask any. “The rogues were terrified…. everyone was terrified after seeing what was behind his mask. I can’t explain it, but it was terrifying. Alpha Dominic used the moment of surprise to save the child, and he did, but the kid was utterly terrified of him. He kept crying and squirmed until he could get away from the same man who saved him while calling the alpha a monster. We got away after that. He refused any form of treatment and didn’t say a word. There’s a lot of rumors surrounding why he wears a mask. He’s probably used to it, but I couldn’t blame him. Not because you’re used to it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t hurt.” Now I understand why Dominic reacted like that. My chest tightened. This time, I’m sure that it was my own pain. He didn’t deserve that. I gave a small smile to Arman. “Thank you for telling me. I promise I won’t tell anyone.” I was about to take my leave, but he suddenly stopped me. “Wait, you don’t seem scared or bothered when I mentioned what was behind his mask. Have you really seen it, or did you say that to make me confess?” The suspicion was normal, almost expected, but left a bitter taste in my mouth. “Are you asking me that because I don’t look scared enough? I’m not sure what the so-called curse was about or what exactly I saw behind his mask either, but how could I see someone who just saved a child as a monster? Isn’t it terrifying how we’re all victims of this pack and don’t even realize it?”
