CHAPTER 3: BETRAYAL BEHIND THE SMILES

2759 Words
The days following the confrontation at the Sports Fest were the heaviest I had experienced since arriving in San Lorenzo High. The rumors about me being a manipulative gold digger had spread to every corner of the campus. Wherever I went, I could feel eyes watching me—eyes filled with judgment, suspicion, and disgust. Students would whisper as I passed by, some even deliberately stepping aside as if being near me would taint them. But despite all that, I still had Kian. He remained by my side, defending me whenever someone spoke ill of me, reassuring me that he knew the truth. Because of him, I was able to hold on. I told myself that as long as he believed in me, it didn’t matter what anyone else thought—even Elias. Elias, on the other hand, became even colder and more hostile toward me. Every time our paths crossed, he would look at me with eyes that held nothing but contempt. He would make sure to remind me of what he believed I was. “Still playing the innocent card, Lila?” he would say whenever he saw me with Kian. “You really are talented. I almost admire how you can fool everyone so easily. But not me. I know exactly what you are.” I wanted to explain, I wanted to tell him that everything Trina said was a lie, but I knew it was useless. His mind was already made up, and no amount of explanation would change it. So I just kept my distance, tried to focus on my studies, and held onto the friendship I had with Kian. Kian had become my safe haven. He would visit me at my aunt’s house sometimes to help me with assignments, or we would stay late at school to work on projects together. I thought that finally, after all the pain, I had found someone I could trust completely. Someone who would never hurt me or betray me. But I was wrong. So very wrong. It was a Wednesday afternoon. Classes had just ended, and Kian told me to wait for him at the school garden because he had something important to show me. He said it was something that could help clear my name and stop all the rumors. I was excited and hopeful, thinking that finally, things would get better. I walked to the garden and sat on our usual bench, waiting patiently. The area was quiet and peaceful, with only the sound of birds chirping and leaves rustling in the wind. I took out my notebook and started writing, losing myself in my thoughts while waiting for him. After about twenty minutes, I heard voices coming from behind the tall hedge nearby. I was about to stand up and call out to Kian when I recognized his voice. But he wasn’t alone. And what I heard next made my blood run cold. “…yes, it’s all going according to plan,” Kian was saying, his voice sounding different—more serious, more calculating. “Elias is already convinced that she’s just using me. The whole school believes it too. Just like we wanted.” My hands froze mid-writing. We? Who is he talking to? “Good,” came another voice, and my heart almost stopped beating. It was Trina. “That’s exactly what we need. The more everyone hates her, the easier it will be to make sure she leaves this school forever. Elias is so blinded by his anger that he doesn’t even realize he’s being played right into our hands.” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I stood up slowly, moving quietly toward the hedge, my legs feeling like lead. I peeked through the leaves, and there they were—Kian and Trina standing close together, talking like old allies. There were smiles on their faces, smiles I had never seen before. “But are you sure you can keep this act up, Kian?” Trina asked, crossing her arms. “You’ve been acting so nice to her, even I almost believed you really cared.” Kian let out a cold laugh—a sound so different from the warm and gentle voice I was used to hearing. “Please. It’s just an act. I’m doing this because I owe you this favor, remember? Elias has always been my rival, and seeing him suffer because of this girl is the best entertainment I could ask for. The more he hates her, the more distracted he becomes, and the easier it is for me to surpass him in everything.” He paused, looking down at his hands before continuing. “And besides, look at her. She’s so naive and innocent. It’s too easy to manipulate her. She thinks I’m her hero, her protector. She trusts me completely. That makes it even more fun. Imagine how crushed she’ll be when she finds out the truth.” Trina laughed along with him. “Perfect! Soon enough, Elias will hate her so much he’ll make sure she leaves, and then everything will go back to normal. Elias will be mine, and you’ll remain on top. Everyone wins except her.” “And the best part?” Kian added, a wicked smirk forming on his lips. “When the time comes, I’ll be the one to expose her. I’ll act like I just found out the truth, like I was betrayed too. Then everyone will praise me for being honest, and she’ll have absolutely no one left to turn to. Elias will hate her forever, and she’ll be completely destroyed.” I felt like the ground had opened up and swallowed me whole. Every word they said hit me like a ton of bricks. The person I trusted most, the person who saved me time and time again, the person I considered my best friend… was working together with my worst enemies all along. Everything was a lie. His kindness, his concern, his protection—all of it was just an act, part of a cruel plan to destroy me and get what they wanted. Tears started streaming down my face, but I didn’t make a sound. I was too shocked, too hurt, too broken to even speak. I wanted to run away, but my feet wouldn’t move. I just stood there behind the hedge, listening to them talk about me like I was nothing more than a toy they were playing with. “Let’s go,” Trina said, checking her watch. “Elias will be here soon. Let’s make sure we look like we’re just talking casually. We don’t want anyone suspecting anything.” They walked away together, leaving me alone in the garden with a heart that felt like it had been torn into pieces. I slid down against the hedge, burying my face in my hands, trying to muffle my sobs. I felt so stupid, so foolish. How could I have been so blind? How could I have trusted someone so easily? “Lila?” I looked up and saw Kian standing there, looking at me with that same warm, concerned expression. If I hadn’t heard what he just said, I would have believed he really cared. “You’re still here,” he said, walking closer. “Sorry I took so long. I just had something important to attend to. Why are you crying? Did something happen?” He reached out to touch my shoulder, but I flinched away violently. His expression shifted slightly, just for a second—something that looked like amusement or satisfaction—but quickly returned to his fake concern. “Lila? What’s wrong?” “Stop pretending!” I raised my voice, unable to hold it in any longer. “I heard everything. Everything you and Trina talked about. I know who you really are now!” For a moment, he didn’t say anything. The mask fell away, and I finally saw the real Kian—cold, calculating, and smug. He looked at me like I was just a bug he had stepped on. “Oh,” he said calmly, shrugging his shoulders as if it was no big deal. “So you found out. Well, good for you. Saves me the trouble of telling you myself later.” I stood up, wiping my tears away and looking straight into his eyes. “Why? What did I ever do to you all to make you hurt me like this? Why did you have to play with my feelings?” “It’s simple,” Kian replied, his voice now completely different—harsh and mocking. “Because you became a problem. You came here and ruined everything. Elias was supposed to be focused on his goals, but suddenly all he could think about was hating you. And Trina wanted him all to herself, so you were in the way. As for me… well, I’ve always wanted to beat Elias at everything. And using you to distract him? That was the easiest and most effective plan I ever had.” He stepped closer, towering over me now. “You really thought I cared about you? Please. You’re just a nobody. A tool we used to get what we want. And you fell for it perfectly. So innocent, so trusting… it was almost too easy.” I felt my knees go weak, but I forced myself to stand strong. “You’re horrible… all of you are horrible. I hate you!” Kian laughed, a sound that sent shivers down my spine. “Hate me all you want, Lila. But remember this—everything that’s happening to you now is because you made the mistake of entering our world. And by the time we’re done with you, you’ll wish you never transferred here in the first place.” He turned around and walked away, leaving me there alone once again. I felt like all the strength had been drained out of my body. I had lost the only person I thought was on my side, and now I knew that my situation was even worse than I imagined. I wasn’t just being bullied—I was part of a game, and I was the losing player. But the worst part was yet to come. The next day, the whole school was buzzing with news. During the morning assembly, Kian stood up in front of everyone with a serious and hurt expression on his face. I knew exactly what was coming. “Everyone, I have something important to say,” Kian announced, his voice sounding sad and disappointed. “For the past weeks, I’ve been trying to help Lila because I believed she was innocent. I defended her, I protected her, and I considered her a good friend. But yesterday… I found out the truth.” Gasps echoed throughout the crowd. I stood there frozen, watching him lie through his teeth with such convincing emotion. “It turns out that everything people said about her was true,” Kian continued, looking directly at me with eyes that looked betrayed. “She really did plan everything from the start. She deliberately spilled juice on Elias just to get attention. And she used me, pretending to be my friend just so she could have protection and status. I feel so foolish for believing her lies.” “No! That’s not true!” I shouted, tears falling again. “He’s lying! Everything he says is made up!” But no one listened. The whole school started murmuring, looking at me with even more hatred and disgust. “She really has a terrible character!” “I thought she was nice, but she’s actually this bad!” “How dare she use Kian just for her own benefit!” Then Elias stepped forward. He walked slowly toward me, his face expressionless but his eyes burning with rage. He stopped right in front of me, looking down at me like I was the lowest form of life. “So it’s all true,” Elias said, his voice cold and cutting. “You really are just as bad as I thought. Worse, actually. You manipulated everyone, including Kian. You played with our feelings and trust just for your own gain.” “Elias, please believe me…” I pleaded, reaching out toward him. “They are tricking you! He and Trina are working together! All of this is just a plan to destroy me!” Elias slapped my hand away roughly. “Don’t touch me! You still have the nerve to lie even now? Kian has no reason to make this up! Why would he do that? Unlike you, he has honor and integrity!” He took a deep breath, his jaw clenching tightly. “I gave you so many chances, Lila. I thought maybe you were just clumsy, just unlucky. But no… you’re just a scheming, selfish girl. You ruined my future, and then you tried to ruin everything else too. I hate you, Lila Marquez. I hate you more than anything in this world.” Trina walked up beside Elias, placing her hand on his arm possessively. “Look at her, Elias. Even after getting caught red-handed, she still makes up excuses. You really have no shame, do you? You don’t deserve to study here. You don’t deserve to be around decent people.” From that day on, my life became pure hell. Now, even students who used to ignore me started joining in on the bullying. They would trip me in hallways, throw things at me when I walked by, write insults on my desk, and refuse to work with me on group projects. I was completely alone. No one wanted to be associated with me, fearing that they would be targeted too. And Elias? He became the worst of them all. Since he believed I had manipulated his rival and caused even more trouble, his attacks became more personal and hurtful. He made it his mission to make sure I suffered every single day. During classes, whenever the teacher wasn’t looking, he would kick my chair or throw paper balls at me with messages written on them: “LIAR”, “GOLD DIGGER”, “GET OUT OF OUR SCHOOL”. During lunch, he and his friends would sit nearby and talk loudly, making sure I heard every word. “Imagine, she was just using Kian all along. She’s really good at playing games,” Marco would say, laughing. “Exactly,” Elias would reply, glancing at me with disgust. “But don’t worry, she’ll get what she deserves. I’ll make sure of that.” Even in activities and school events, they found ways to humiliate me. Once, during a presentation, someone replaced my presentation slides with embarrassing photos and messages about me. Everyone laughed, and I had to run out of the room crying while Elias watched with a satisfied look on his face. I would go home every day exhausted and broken. My aunt noticed the changes in me, but whenever she asked, I would just tell her I was just tired from studying. I didn’t want her to worry, and I knew that telling her wouldn’t change anything. I was trapped in this nightmare, and there seemed to be no way out. But despite all the pain and suffering, there was something I noticed—something that confused me more than anything else. Sometimes, when Elias thought I wasn’t looking, I would catch him staring at me. And in those moments, I didn’t just see hatred. There was something else in his eyes—confusion, doubt, and something that looked a lot like concern. But whenever I would look back, it would quickly disappear, replaced by his usual coldness. I didn’t understand it. How could he look at me like that when he believed I was the worst person alive? Why did I sometimes feel like he was holding back, like he didn’t want to hurt me as much as he said he did? And little did I know that this betrayal, this pain, and these confusing looks were all leading to something bigger. That beneath all the anger and hatred, feelings were growing—feelings that both Elias and I were too afraid to admit, and feelings that would eventually change everything between us. But for now, all I knew was that I was completely alone, betrayed by the person I trusted most, and hated by the person who would eventually mean everything to me.
