CHAPTER 6: SEEKING FORGIVENESS

1884 Words
After discovering the truth, Elias felt like the weight of the whole world was pressing down on his shoulders. All the memories of how he treated me flashed through his mind—all the insults, the pranks, the times he chose to believe lies instead of me. He realized that he was just as guilty as Kian and Trina, because he was the one who allowed them to use him. He spent the whole night thinking about what he should do. He knew saying sorry wouldn’t be enough. He had hurt me deeply, and trust once broken is never easy to rebuild. But he was determined to try, no matter how difficult it would be. The next morning, he arrived at school earlier than usual, waiting for me by the school gate. When he saw me walking toward the entrance, his heart skipped a beat. I looked smaller and more fragile than ever, my head bowed low as if expecting trouble at any moment. When I looked up and saw him standing there, I immediately stopped in my tracks. I hesitated, thinking that he was there to humiliate me again. I tried to walk past him quickly, but he stepped in front of me, blocking my way. “Lila,” he called out softly. “Can we talk?” I crossed my arms over my chest, putting up my defenses. “What do you want, Elias? Are you going to accuse me of something else again? Or make fun of me like you always do?” Hearing the coldness in my voice made his chest ache. He shook his head quickly. “No. Nothing like that. I just… I need to tell you something important. Please, just give me a few minutes.” I looked around nervously, worried that other students would see us and start rumors again. But when I saw the sincere look in his eyes, I found myself nodding slowly. “Fine. But make it quick.” We walked together toward the back of the campus, near the big mango tree where I usually spent my breaks. It was quiet and secluded, away from the eyes of other students. Once we were alone, Elias took a deep breath and looked straight into my eyes. “Lila… I know I have no right to ask this, but please listen to everything I have to say.” He told me everything—how he caught Kian and Trina planting items in my locker, how he realized they had been manipulating him all along, and how he regretted every single thing he had done to me. “I was so stupid and blind,” he said, his voice filled with remorse. “I let my anger and pride control me. I believed them because it was easier to think that you were the villain than to admit I might be wrong. I hurt you so much, and I don’t expect you to forgive me right away. But I want you to know… I know the truth now. You are innocent. You never did any of the things they accused you of.” I stood there listening to him, my mind reeling with mixed emotions. Part of me felt relieved that he finally knew the truth, but another part of me felt angry and hurt remembering all the pain he had caused. “So what now?” I asked, my voice trembling slightly. “Now that you know I’m telling the truth, what happens next? Are you going to protect me now? Are you going to be my hero?” Elias winced at my words. “I know it doesn’t mean much coming from me, but yes. I will protect you from now on. I won’t let anyone hurt you again—not even myself. I will do whatever it takes to make up for all the mistakes I’ve made.” I let out a bitter laugh, wiping the tears that started forming in my eyes. “It’s not that easy, Elias. For months, you treated me like garbage. You called me names, humiliated me in front of everyone, and made my life a living hell. You chose to believe them over me, even when you knew deep down something wasn’t right. How can I trust you again? How do I know you won’t turn against me the next time someone tells you a lie?” Every word I said felt like a stab to his heart, but he knew he deserved it. He took a step closer, looking at me with so much sincerity it made my breath catch. “I don’t expect you to trust me right away,” he said gently. “I know I have to earn it. And I am willing to wait as long as it takes. I will prove to you that I have changed. I will show you that I am not the same person who hurt you before.” He paused, then added in a softer voice, “And Lila… I think I already knew the truth deep inside. That’s why I kept finding myself looking out for you, that’s why I couldn’t bring myself to hurt you as much as I wanted to. I was just too stubborn and angry to admit it.” I looked away, my heart racing. I didn’t know what to say. Part of me wanted to believe him, to accept his apology and let everything go. But the scars were still fresh, and I was afraid of getting hurt again. “I need time, Elias,” I whispered finally. “I need time to process everything. I’m not saying I’ll never forgive you… but I can’t just forget everything that happened overnight.” A small smile appeared on his face, and for the first time, it reached his eyes. “That’s all I ask for. Take all the time you need. I’m not going anywhere.” True to his word, Elias started changing everything. From that day on, he became my shield. Whenever anyone tried to bully me or say bad things about me, he was there to stop them. He publicly confronted Kian and Trina, revealing their schemes to the whole school. Everyone was shocked to learn the truth, and soon enough, the tables turned. Kian and Trina became the ones everyone looked down on, while I was finally cleared of all the false accusations. But Elias didn’t stop there. He went out of his way to make things right, doing small but meaningful things every single day. Every morning, he would wait for me by the gate and walk me to class. He would carry my books, share his snacks with me, and make sure no one bothered me. During breaks, he would sit with me under the mango tree, either talking to me or just keeping me company in silence. He even started helping me with my studies, since he was one of the top students in class. At first, I was still awkward and distant around him. I would answer his questions shortly and keep my guard up. But as days turned into weeks, I began to notice how genuine his efforts were. He never pressured me, never asked for more than I was willing to give. He was patient, kind, and always respectful of my space. One afternoon, we were sitting under our usual tree, reviewing for our upcoming final exams. Elias noticed that I was rubbing my eyes tiredly, looking exhausted from studying. “Take a break,” he said softly, closing my book gently. “You’ve been reading for hours. You’ll just get tired if you push yourself too hard.” I nodded, leaning back against the tree trunk. “I just want to make sure I pass all my subjects. I need good grades to get into the university I want.” Elias looked at me with admiration. “You really are hardworking. That’s one of the things I noticed about you even when I was being an i***t. You never let anything stop you from doing your best.” He reached into his bag and took out a small sketchbook. He handed it to me, and when I opened it, my eyes widened in surprise. Inside were drawings—beautiful, detailed sketches of different things. Some were of the school garden, some were of the sunset sky, and there were even a few drawings of me. In those drawings, I was smiling, reading, or writing—capturing moments when I looked peaceful and happy. “W-why did you draw me?” I asked, looking up at him. Elias scratched the back of his neck, looking slightly shy. “I… I started drawing you when I was still confused about my feelings. Even when I was telling myself I hated you, I couldn’t stop looking at you. Drawing you helped me understand what I was really feeling. You became my inspiration, Lila.” He looked at me seriously. “I used to draw because it was my dream. But now… I draw because you are in every piece of my art.” His words made my heart flutter, and I felt my cheeks turning warm. For the first time, I didn’t feel scared or uncomfortable around him. Instead, I felt safe and happy. “Thank you, Elias,” I said, smiling genuinely at him. “These are beautiful. I’ll take good care of them.” Seeing me smile at him like that made Elias’ heart race faster than any basketball game ever could. He realized that he would do anything just to keep seeing that smile. “Lila,” he said, gathering all his courage. “I know it’s still too soon, and I don’t want to rush you. But I need you to know… what I feel for you is no longer just guilt or responsibility. It’s something more. Something I’ve never felt for anyone else.” He reached out and gently held my hand, his touch warm and comforting. “I think I started falling for you a long time ago, even when I was too stubborn to admit it. And now that I know the truth… I’m falling even harder every single day.” I looked at our joined hands, then back up at him. I could see the honesty and affection in his eyes. All the fear and hesitation I had felt slowly melted away, replaced by something warm and wonderful. Maybe it was true—sometimes, the person you hate the most is actually the one meant to love you the most. “I think…” I whispered, squeezing his hand gently. “I think I’m starting to feel the same way too.” The smile that spread across Elias’ face was brighter than any sunset I had ever seen. For the first time in a long time, both of us felt complete, knowing that we had found something real and beautiful amidst all the pain and chaos. But even though things were getting better, we both knew that our journey was far from over. There were still challenges waiting for us, and people who would try to tear us apart again. But as long as we had each other, we knew we could face anything together.
