THEY HAD BEEN MARRIED for nearly three months, and her first Christmas Down Under was just around the corner. The onslaught of the summer heat was unrelenting. The place was permanently encased in heat haze during the day, and at night, the only respite was the air-conditioning. Without it, she would have been unable to function, let alone survive. She had never known heat like it. It was draining. Withering. Blistering. Unforgiving. Though she was mostly indoors, she had a permanent blush.
