SHE ALREADY HAD AN EXPECTATION of waking up alone, so she wasn’t disappointed when she did. She raised herself to a sitting position in the hammock, waited until it stopped swaying before she hopped out. She felt triumphant when she landed squarely on the ground, feeling that she was already getting the hang of it. She showered, changed, took a deep breath, and tried to inhale courage if that was possible. There was no point staying in the bedroom, so she padded out softly. She stood in the living room, looking around. Everything was how she left it after her first visit. Same furniture. Same non-existent décor. Same paint. Same people. She heard a familiar voice coming from the kitchen, singing. She went to investigate and found Sue, her soon to be mother-in-law, preparing lunch.
