Evelynn blinked up at Midas, her vision still blurred with tears. Carefully, she lifted her gloved hands and wrapped them around his wrists, gently easing his grip from her face. The moment he let go, she leaned back, to put some distance between them. Her heart thundered like a drum against her ribs, but she forced herself to take slow, steady breaths. She had to stay calm and make him understand. “Midas... please,” she whispered, her voice trembling despite her effort to steady it. “There’s been a misunderstanding. My parents didn’t kill anyone.
