CHAPTER 8 ‘No!’ Guinevere felt her courage disintegrate. A terrible sadness overwhelmed her as Lancelot and the lady rose hastily to greet her. Too late, she reproached herself bitterly. She’d come too late. Oh, why hadn’t she followed her instincts and left straightaway instead of delaying to make preparations for Beltaine? ‘My lady.’ Lancelot bowed before her. Guinevere could hardly bear to look at her faithless knight, and at the lady standing bold as brass beside him. If she hadn’t delayed, she might have reached the Lady Charlotte before Lancelot, before they had time to pledge their love, before any harm could be done. She whimpered as she recalled her dreams, her hopes, her plans for the future. All for nothing! She had lost her love, and because of that would lose the kingdom. W
