A poof of smoke comes out of it. Guess he didn’t fix it after all. Then everything gets fuzzy and I faint. * * * Oh, my aching head. I blink and rub it. I’m surrounded by strange smells and sounds. Looking around, I try to figure out where I am. I’m lying on a cold, concrete floor. It’s dark. And the closest match for the smell is wet gym socks. Ew. Then I see the hunched-over old man and remember what happened. Whimpers grab my ears from behind me. I’m afraid of what I’ll see when I turn around. I don’t want to. But I have to. Slowly and quietly. My family is all tied up. They’re sitting in chairs, backs together, with duct tape over their mouths. My jaw drops. I want to scream, but they all shake their heads no. With wild eyes and head motions, they plead with me. They’re all trying
