The offer came on a Tuesday.
In a cream envelope. Hand-delivered. No return address.
Inside: a card. Heavy stock.
`THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES REQUESTS THE HONOR OF YOUR PRESENCE`
`FOR A DISCUSSION OF NATIONAL SECURITY`
`WHITE HOUSE. OVAL OFFICE. FRIDAY. 2 PM.`
And underneath, handwritten:
`Please come. It’s important. - R`
Reyes.
Zara read it 3 times. "The President?"
Dante was in the kitchen. Chopping onions. "For what?"
"I don’t know." She held out the card. "But Reyes signed it."
Dante wiped his hands. Took the card. "We’re not going."
"Elena has a recital Friday," Zara said. "We can’t—"
"We can say no." Dante dropped the card on the counter. "We said no to reinstatement. We said no to the contract. We say no to this."
The phone rang.
Unknown number.
Zara answered. "Hello?"
"Zara." Reyes. "Don’t hang up."
"Why is the President inviting us to the White House?"
"Because we have a problem. And you’re the only two people who can fix it." Reyes’ voice was low. "Can you come? Please?"
Zara looked at Dante.
Dante shook his head.
Zara said, "We’ll be there."

*Friday. 2 PM. The Oval Office.*
It wasn’t like on TV. Smaller. Messier.
The President was 60s. Tired eyes. Suit that didn’t fit right.
Reyes stood in the corner. In a suit too. Not retired.
"Agent Cole. Mr. De Luca." The President stood. Shook their hands. "Thank you for coming."
"Mr. President," Zara said.
"Sit." He gestured to chairs. "I’ll be blunt. We have a leak."
Dante sat. Didn’t smile. "There’s always a leak."
"Not like this." The President slid a folder across the desk. "Someone is selling classified files. FBI. DOD. CIA. On the dark web. 10 million dollars a file."
Zara opened it. Photos. Documents. Names of undercover agents.
"How long?" Dante asked.
"8 months." The President sighed. "We’ve traced the money. It’s going to the same offshore accounts Victor used. The ones you leaked."
The room went quiet.
"You think it’s Hall’s people," Zara said.
"I think it’s Hall," the President said. "From Supermax."
Dante laughed. Once. "He’s in solitary. No internet."
"He has a lawyer," Reyes said from the corner. "The lawyer has a phone. The phone has a buyer."
The President leaned forward. "We need you."
Zara stared. "Excuse me?"
"We need you to go back in," the President said. "Undercover. As yourselves. The criminals who got away. The ones who have the ledger. The ones who have the money."
Dante stood. "No."
"Mr. De Luca—"
"No." Dante’s voice was steel. "We did our time. We raised our kid. We’re done."
The President looked at Zara. "Ms. Cole?"
Zara thought of Elena. Of the recital. Of the blue door.
Then she thought of the names in the folder. Agents. Families.
"How long?" she asked.
"2 weeks," the President said. "In and out. We catch the lawyer. We catch the buyer. We shut it down."
Dante looked at her. "Zara."
"I know," Zara whispered. "But if we don’t..."
She didn’t finish.

*That Night: The Fight*
Elena was asleep.
Dante was packing a bag. Angry.
"You said we were done," he said.
"We are done," Zara said. "This is 2 weeks."
"2 weeks is how it started last time."
"That’s not fair."
"Isn’t it?" He threw clothes in the bag. "You want to go back? To that life?"
"I want Elena to grow up without worrying about her parents’ names being on a leak," Zara shot back. "I want to sleep without checking the locks 4 times."
Dante stopped. "So do I."
"Then help me end it."
He looked at her. Really looked. "What if they hurt you?"
"They won’t."
"What if they try?"
"Then you’ll be there."
Dante sighed. Dropped the bag. "Fine. 2 weeks. And then we’re done. For real."
Zara hugged him. "Thank you."
"Don’t thank me yet."

*Week 1: Back In*
The cover was simple.
Dante and Zara. Broke. Desperate. Selling what they had left of Victor’s network.
They met the lawyer in a hotel bar in DC.
He was 40. Nervous. Expensive suit.
"Mr. and Mrs. Ruiz," he said. "I’m told you have something for me."
Dante slid over a drive. Fake. Loaded with trackers. "Victor’s backup. The real one."
The lawyer’s eyes lit up. "The President will pay well for this."
"10 million," Zara said. "Cash."
"Done."
They walked out.
Reyes was in the van across the street. "We got him. Now we wait for the buyer."
---
*Week 2: The Buyer*
The buyer was in Miami.
A private yacht. International waters.
Dante and Zara went as the sellers.
The buyer was a man in his 50s. Russian accent. 3 bodyguards.
"Show me," he said.
Dante opened the laptop. Showed him files. Real ones this time. Old ones. From Victor.
"Good," the buyer said. "Transfer the money."
Zara nodded to Reyes, on the boat next to them.
FBI swarmed.
Gunshots. 30 seconds.
The buyer was cuffed. The lawyer was already in custody.
It was over.
---
*Back Home. Sunday.*
Elena’s recital.
Zara made it. 10 minutes late. In a dress from the hotel.
Dante was in the front row. Filming.
Elena saw them and smiled so big.
After, ice cream. Park. No cameras.
Reyes called. "It’s done. The leak is plugged. Hall is in deeper solitary."
"Good," Zara said.
"Thank you," Reyes said. "For real."
Zara hung up.
Dante took her hand. "Last time?"
Zara nodded. "Last time."
---
1 month later.
No emails. No threats. No offers.
The President sent a letter. Handwritten.
`Thank you. The country owes you. - POTUS`
Zara put it in a drawer.
Dante closed his firm. Opened a new one. Consulting only. No government.
Zara started teaching again. At the community center.
Elena turned 6.
On her birthday, Reyes came by. No wine. Just cake.
"Quiet," Reyes said.
"Really quiet this time," Zara said.
They all laughed.
That night, Dante and Zara sat on the porch.
"Do you regret it?" Dante asked. "Any of it?"
Zara thought about it. The leak. Prison. The book. The warehouse.
"No," she said. "Do you?"
Dante shook his head. "I’d do it all again. For you. For her."
They sat in silence.
The last offer had come.
And they’d said yes.
Now there was only one thing left.
