Six months changes a person.
Zara’s stomach was round now. 32 weeks. She moved slower. Talked softer.
Dante had built a crib by hand. Sanded every edge twice. Painted it blue.
The house by the coast didn’t feel like hiding anymore. It felt like home.
Until the mail came.
Same blue door. Same garden Zara had killed and revived 3 times.
And in the mailbox: one envelope. No stamp. No return address.
Inside: a plane ticket. One way.
Destination: Washington D.C.
Date: Tomorrow.
And a note.
`The 6 are in prison. But the 7th isn’t. Come alone. - R`
No name. But they knew the handwriting.
Reyes.
Dante read it twice. Then burned it in the sink.
"We’re not going," he said.
Zara was at the table. Hands on her stomach. "We have to."
"Zara, it’s a trap."
"Or it’s the last loose end." She looked up. "Dante, what if it’s about the baby? What if Victor had more files? What if the 7th name knows?"
Dante crossed the room. Knelt in front of her. Pressed his forehead to her stomach. "I don’t want to lose you."
"You won’t." She threaded her fingers through his hair. "But I can’t raise a kid looking over my shoulder forever."
He didn’t answer. But he bought the ticket.
---
*Washington D.C. 24 Hours Later*
Dante didn’t let her go alone.
"I said come alone," Reyes said when she saw them both at the metro exit.
"And I said no," Dante said.
Reyes looked older. Grayer. In civilian clothes now. Retired, maybe. Or buried.
"Fine. But we talk in public." She started walking. "You made a mess, you two."
"The mess was already there," Zara said. "We just poured gasoline on it."
Reyes stopped at a food truck. Bought 3 coffees. "The 6 pled guilty. 40 to 60 years each. The Bureau is still doing damage control. But there’s a 7th."
Dante’s jaw tightened. "Victor said 6."
"Victor lied." Reyes handed them coffee. "There was always a 7th. The money man. The one who funded everything. Who ordered the hits on the 14. Who sent Crown-knuckles."
Zara’s stomach flipped. "Who?"
Reyes looked around. Lowered her voice. "Senator Alistair Vance."
The name hit like a brick.
Vance. Chair of the Senate Oversight Committee. The man who’d given speeches about "cleaning up the Bureau."
"He’s been untouchable for 20 years," Reyes continued. "Because he owns half of D.C. But he’s scared now. Because of you. Because you leaked the ledger."
"So why meet us?" Dante asked. "Why not arrest him?"
"Because I don’t have proof." Reyes’ eyes were tired. "I have suspicions. I have a trail of money that disappears. I have 3 dead witnesses. What I need is bait."
Zara understood immediately. "You want us to draw him out."
"I want you to come home," Reyes said. "Publicly. Do an interview. Tell your story. Make Vance think you’re alone. Vulnerable. That you have more evidence."
"And when he comes for us?" Dante said.
"We catch him." Reyes met Zara’s eyes. "On tape. With a federal warrant."
Zara put a hand on her stomach. "I’m 8 weeks from giving birth."
"I know." Reyes’ voice softened. "That’s why I didn’t ask before. But Zara, if we don’t do this now, he’ll never stop. He’ll find you in 5 years. In 10. He’ll find your kid."
The wind picked up.
Dante looked at Zara. Really looked. "Your call."
Zara thought of the blue crib. Of the garden. Of nights with no sirens.
Then she thought of Crown-knuckles. Of the 14. Of a kid growing up with a target on their back.
"Okay," she said. "We do it."
Reyes nodded. "Good. You’ll stay at a safehouse. Marshals 24/7. We do the interview in 48 hours. Live. National."
"And after?" Zara asked.
"After, we end him. And you go back to your garden."
---
*48 Hours Later: The Interview*
It was broadcast everywhere.
Zara in a beige dress. Hair down. 8 months pregnant. Sitting next to Dante in a borrowed suit.
The anchor: "Agent Cole, Mr. De Luca, why come forward now?"
Zara looked straight into the camera. "Because we’re tired of running. Because Senator Vance thinks he can kill 14 people and get away with it. Because my child deserves to be born in a country where that’s not true."
She laid it all out. Names. Dates. The ledger. The money.
She didn’t mention the 2 million. She didn’t mention Mexico.
When it was over, the internet exploded.
#VanceResign was trending in 10 minutes.
Dante squeezed her hand under the table. "You were incredible."
"I was terrified," she whispered.
---
*Hour 3: The Bite*
They were in the safehouse. 3 Marshals at the door. Cameras on every corner.
The TV was on. Vance was doing his own press conference.
"This is a lie. A desperate attempt by criminals to smear a public servant."
His phone rang. On live TV.
He answered. "What?"
Whoever was on the other end made him go pale.
He hung up. Looked at the cameras. "I have to go."
He left.
Reyes called 5 minutes later. "He’s moving. Private jet to an airstrip in Virginia. We have him."
"Is it over?" Zara asked.
"Almost," Reyes said. "One more thing."
---
*The Airstrip*
It was 2 AM. Cold.
Vance was getting on a jet. Two bodyguards. One briefcase.
FBI swarmed the tarmac.
Vance was cuffed. Still shouting. "This is illegal! I’m a senator!"
Reyes walked up to him. "Senator Vance, you’re under arrest for racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder, and 14 counts of obstruction."
Vance laughed. "You have nothing."
Reyes held up a phone. "We have this. From your jet’s comms. 20 minutes ago. ‘Make sure the pregnant one doesn’t make it to the hospital.’"
Vance’s face fell.
Zara was watching from a van 200 yards away. Dante’s arm around her.
"He said it," Zara whispered. "On tape."
"He did," Dante said. "It’s over."
The jet took off without him.
---
*2 Weeks Later*
Vance was in federal custody. No bail.
The safehouse was empty.
Dante and Zara were on a train again. But this time, not running.
Going home. To the blue door. To the garden.
Reyes met them at the station. Not in uniform. Just a woman with flowers.
"For the baby," she said. Handed them to Zara.
"Thank you," Zara said. "For everything."
Reyes nodded. "You did good. Both of you."
She turned to go. Then stopped. "One more thing. The 2 million. It’s clean now. In an account. Under your kid’s name. Anonymous trust."
Dante frowned. "We said we didn’t want—"
"You said you didn’t want blood money," Reyes cut him off. "This isn’t. This is reparations. Use it for college. Use it for a house. Just... live."
She walked away.
---
*The Blue Door. 3 Weeks Later.*
Zara went into labor at 3 AM.
Dante drove like hell to the hospital.
12 hours later, a baby girl. 7 pounds. 3 ounces.
Screaming. Perfect.
They named her Elena. After Zara’s grandmother. After the fake name that saved them.
At 3 AM, in the hospital room, Zara was asleep. Dante was holding Elena.
There was a knock.
Reyes. Again. With a teddy bear.
"Can I?" she asked. Nodded at the baby.
Dante nodded.
Reyes held Elena. Carefully. "She’s beautiful."
"Yeah," Dante said.
Reyes handed her back. "I won’t bother you again. Promise."
She turned to leave.
"Reyes," Zara said from the bed. Awake.
Reyes stopped.
"Thank you," Zara said. "For choosing us."
Reyes smiled. For the first time in years. "Someone had to."
She left.
---
One year later.
The garden was thriving.
Elena was crawling. Into everything.
Dante was teaching her how to stack blocks. Zara was on the phone with a publisher.
Because Zara wrote the book.
`THE LEDGER: HOW WE BURNED IT DOWN`
It was #1 on the bestseller list.
At 3 PM, Dante and Zara walked to the park. Elena in a stroller.
No track. No fence. No guards.
Just a family.
On a bench, an old woman was reading the paper. Headline: `VANCE SENTENCED TO LIFE`
The woman looked up. It was Reyes.
She nodded at them. Once.
Zara nodded back.
The sentence was over.
The war was over.
This... this was life
