The book tour was supposed to be 3 cities.
It became 12.
`THE LEDGER: HOW WE BURNED IT DOWN` by Zara Cole hit shelves on a Tuesday.
By Friday it was #1.
By Sunday, Senator Vance’s lawyers were threatening to sue.
By Monday, Dante had installed 4 new cameras and changed the locks again.
"Are you sure about this?" Dante asked, watching Zara pack for Chicago. Elena was on his hip, chewing a block.
Zara zipped the suitcase. "We already did the interview. The book is out. We can’t hide from it now."
"We can hide from everything else." He kissed Elena’s head. "People are angry, Zara. The 6’s families. Vance’s donors. Crown-knuckles is still out there."
"I know." She came over. Took Elena. "That’s why we do this. So when Elena’s old enough to Google her parents, she doesn’t find lies."
The book was brutal. Honest.
Names. Dates. The interrogation room video. The prison track walks. The pregnancy. The 217 million.
Zara left out the safehouse addresses and the 2 million trust. Reyes told her to.
The publisher called it "a masterclass in accountability."
The internet called it "the most dangerous memoir of the decade."

*Chicago. Book Signing. Day 3.*
The line wrapped around the bookstore. 200 people.
Zara signed: `Stay safe. Stay loud. - Z`
Dante stood behind her. Arms crossed. Eyes on every door.
Hour 2: A man in a gray hoodie cut the line.
"Agent Cole," he said. Too loud.
Security moved.
The man pulled out a copy of the book. "Can you sign this to my brother? He’s in prison because of you."
Zara’s pen stopped. "What’s his name?"
"Doesn’t matter." The man leaned in. "You ruined 14 families."
Dante stepped forward. "Sir, you need to—"
The man opened the book. Inside the cover, tucked in: a photo.
Zara. Pregnant. Leaving the hospital. Elena in her arms.
Timestamped: 3 weeks ago.
The room went cold.
Dante saw it and grabbed Zara’s arm. "We’re done."
Security swarmed. The man was gone before they could touch him.
In the car, Zara’s hands were shaking. "They have photos of Elena."
"I know." Dante was already calling Reyes. "I know."
Reyes answered on 1 ring. "I saw the livestream. You’re coming home. Now."
---
*Home. 48 Hours Later.*
The blue door house was compromised.
They didn’t say it. But they both felt it.
That night, Dante moved them. No warning.
New house. 20 minutes away. No name on the deed. Paid in cash from the trust.
Zara didn’t argue. She packed Elena’s crib, the books, the garden pots.
"Is this it?" she asked as they drove away. "Are we running again?"
"No," Dante said. "We’re fighting differently."
He pulled into a driveway. Brick house. Fence. No cameras visible.
Reyes was on the porch.
"I hate that you’re here," Reyes said. "But you’re not safe in the other house."
Zara got out with Elena. "Who was the man?"
"We don’t know. But the photo means they’ve been watching since the hospital." Reyes looked at Elena. "We need to make a choice. Full protection. Or full exposure."
"What’s the difference?" Dante asked.
"Protection: New names. New country. Witness protection for real this time. You disappear."
"Exposure: You go public. Again. You tell them you’re not scared. You dare them to come."
Zara looked at Dante. "I don’t want Elena to grow up in witness protection."
"Neither do I," Dante said.
Reyes sighed. "Then we go with option 2. But it’s going to get worse before it gets better."

*Month 2: The Threats*
They came daily.
Emails: `WE KNOW WHERE YOUR DAUGHTER GOES TO DAYCARE`
Letters: Photos of the park. The grocery store.
One voicemail: Crown-knuckles. "You should’ve stayed in Mexico, Cole."
The FBI traced them. Burner phones. Overseas.
Zara kept writing. Op-eds. Interviews.
`I am not afraid. And you shouldn’t be either.`
Dante kept watch. Every window. Every car. Every shadow.
Elena turned 1.
---
*Elena’s First Birthday.*
No party. No guests.
Just cake in the kitchen. Homemade. Lopsided.
Elena smashed it with both hands. Got frosting in her hair.
Dante took photos. Zara cried.
After Elena was asleep, Zara sat at the kitchen table. Laptop open.
"What are you doing?" Dante asked.
"Writing the last chapter," Zara said. "The one I didn’t put in the book."
She titled it: `FOR ELENA, WHEN YOU’RE OLD ENOUGH`
She wrote about the leak. About prison. About choosing him.
About being scared and doing it anyway.
Dante read over her shoulder. When she was done, he kissed her temple. "She’ll be proud of you."
The doorbell rang.
11 PM. No one should be there.
Dante went to the door. Didn’t open it. "Who is it?"
"Delivery," a voice said. "For Ms. Cole."
Dante looked through the peephole. No truck. No uniform.
He didn’t open it.
The voice again: "She’ll want this. It’s from Victor."
Zara froze in the kitchen.
Victor was dead.
Dante pulled his gun from the drawer. "Step back from the door."
The voice laughed. "Too late."
The window in the kitchen shattered.
Glass everywhere.
Dante moved without thinking. Tackled Zara to the floor. Covered her with his body.
Pop. Pop. Pop.
Not gunshots. Flashbangs.
Screaming outside. "FBI! GET DOWN!"
Reyes burst through the front door. 6 agents behind her.
"Clear!"
It was over in 40 seconds.
Outside: 3 men in cuffs. Crown-knuckles was one of them.
Reyes came into the kitchen. Saw Zara on the floor. Saw Dante over her.
"You okay?" Reyes asked.
Zara nodded. Holding Elena, who was screaming. "She’s okay. She’s okay."
Reyes picked up the package from the porch. Opened it with gloves.
Inside: a USB. And a note.
`You missed one. - V`
---
*The USB*
They watched it in Reyes’ office. 3 AM.
Victor. On a hospital bed. IV in his arm. Dated 2 days before Harbor View.
"If you’re watching this, I failed," Victor said. "But I made sure someone would finish it. The 7th name isn’t Vance. Vance was a puppet."
Dante sat forward. "What?"
Victor smiled. "The 7th is Director Hall."
The room went silent.
"Hall was getting 20% of everything. He ordered the leak. He ordered the hits. He’s been running the Bureau and Victor’s operation at the same time."
The video ended.
Zara stood up. "We need to—"
"Sit down," Reyes said. "We already know."
"What?"
"We’ve been building a case for 8 months. Because of you. Because of the book." Reyes rubbed her eyes. "We were waiting for him to make a mistake."
"And now?" Dante asked.
"And now we arrest him. Tomorrow. On live TV." Reyes looked at Zara. "We need you there. To testify."
Zara looked at Elena, asleep in the carrier. "I can’t leave her."
"Bring her," Reyes said. "This ends tomorrow. I promise."
---
*The Next Day: The Arrest*
Director Hall was at his desk.
The press was there. For a "statement on Bureau reform."
Reyes walked in. With 4 agents. With Zara. With Elena.
"Director Hall," Reyes said. "You’re under arrest."
Hall stood. "On what charges?"
"Racketeering. Murder. Treason." Reyes read him his rights.
Cameras flashed.
Hall looked at Zara. "You did this."
Zara held Elena tighter. "No. You did this to yourself."
They took him out in cuffs.
---
*1 Week Later*
The news cycle lasted 4 days.
Then it was over.
Hall pled guilty. 3 days into trial.
The Bureau issued a statement. Apologized to Zara and Dante. Offered reinstatement.
Zara declined.
Dante declined.
---
*The Garden. 2 Weeks Later.*
The blue door house again. New locks. New cameras. But it felt like home.
Elena was walking now. Wobbly. Into everything.
Zara finished the last chapter of the book. Sent it to the publisher.
Dante was grilling. Badly.
Reyes came by. No flowers this time. Just a bottle of wine.
"To the end," Reyes said, raising a glass.
"To the end," Zara echoed.
They drank.
After Reyes left, Dante found Zara in the nursery. Rocking Elena.
"You think it’s really over?" he asked.
Zara looked at him. At their daughter. At the life they’d built from ash.
"I think," she said, "that we get to choose what happens next."
Dante sat next to her. Put his arm around them both.
Outside, it was quiet.
No sirens. No knocks. No burner phones.
Just the sound of crickets. And Elena breathing.
The book was out.
The 7th was in prison.
The sentence was served.
Now came the part they’d fought for:
Living.
