Gavin and his mother made a sort of peace after that. They did talk, but not about Jason. They talked about the public library, about high school, about the different girls he dated, what to plant in the garden behind the back yard. Normal things. No, Gavin kept reminding himself, the things of normals.
Not that he ever forgot he was a secret, of course. He never forgot Jason’s last look at him before running into the hands of the sheriff. He never forgot to take his medication, to go to Dr. Deerman for spell renewals. Both Gavin and his mother were relieved when he moved into Mangum dorm in the Upper Quad at the beginning of his freshman year at UNC.
