Carrie switched off the radio when the patriotic music started up again. “Well, that was worthless,” she said. “Let’s see if we can pick up some real news.” “You have an ultrasonic?” Gavin asked. Carrie grinned and raised her eyebrows. “Be right back.” She went to her bedroom, dug out the ultrasonic behind the suitcases on the top shelf of her closet and brought it to the living room. She had to fiddle with it for a while before she got a signal and the static cleared. They heard a woman’s voice, a Down East voice by the accent. The woman said she was “East of Raleigh,” and Carrie guessed she was a good ways east.
