Chapter 3: "Tramples"

1432 Words
I stepped into the playroom, my heart racing as Alexander led the way. The room was spacious and filled with toys, but my eyes were drawn immediately to the two small figures standing near a colorful activity table. Lily and Leo Stone - the children I'd be caring for. My breath caught as I took in their features. They were mirror images of each other, with Alexander's strong jawline softened by delicate cheekbones that must have come from their mother. Lily's long dark hair was pulled back in a neat ponytail, while Leo's matched his father's slightly tousled style. Lily moved in front of her brother, chin raised as she assessed me with sharp blue eyes. I could practically feel her skepticism radiating across the room. Leo peeked out from behind her, curiosity warring with shyness on his face. I knelt, bringing myself to their eye level. "Hi there," I said, keeping my voice warm and gentle. "I'm Clara. It's so nice to meet you both." Lily narrowed her eyes slightly. She asked straightforwardly, "Who are you, and what is the reason for your presence here?" I heard Alexander start to admonish her, but I shook my head slightly. Her bluntness was refreshing, even if the suspicion stung a bit. "Well, I'm here to help take care of you and Leo," I explained. "To play with you, help with homework, make sure you're safe and having fun. But most importantly, I'm here to get to know you both." Leo's eyes widened at that, and he took a small step out from behind his sister. I noticed a worn stuffed elephant clutched in his arms, one ear slightly frayed from frequent cuddles. "That's a very handsome elephant you have there," I said, smiling at Leo. "Does he have a name?" Leo blinked, then held the elephant out a bit. "Tramples," he said softly. "Because elephants trample stuff." I laughed, delighted by the logic. "That's brilliant! I bet Tramples is great at keeping away bad dreams, huh?" Leo nodded solemnly. "He sits guard all night." Lily was still eyeing me suspiciously, but I could see her resolve wavering. She crossed her arms. “So, tell me the answer to eleven multiplied by fourteen," she asked. I raised my eyebrow in admiration. "Ooh, good one. Let's see..." I made a show of counting on my fingers, then grinned. "One hundred and fifty-four. Want to check my math?" Lily's eyes widened slightly, then she it narrowed again. "Okay, what about..." For the next few minutes, we went back and forth with increasingly complex math problems. I could see Alexander watching us with a mix of amusement and something deeper - pride, maybe? Or relief? Finally, Lily uncrossed her arms. "You're pretty smart," she admitted grudgingly. "For a grown-up.” I laughed. "Why thank you! Maybe you can help me brush up on my long division while I'm here." Leo tugged on Lily's sleeve. "Can we show her the fort?" he whispered, loudly enough for everyone to hear. Lily hesitated, then nodded. "Okay. But she has to know the password." "Password?" I asked, intrigued. Lily leaned in close, as her breath tickled my ear as she whispered the password, "Tramples." I nodded solemnly. "I will guard it with my life." Alexander cleared his throat. "Why don't we show Clara around the grounds? It's a beautiful day out." As we walked out, I noticed a tiny hand reaching for mine. I glanced downwards and noticed Leo looking up at me with a shy smile. My heart warmed slightly. Lily and Alexander strolled together as she talked excitedly about her current science project. Most of my focus was on feeling the warmth of Leo's small hand in mine and noticing how the sunlight highlighted his hair, as I listened with only partial attention. As we turned a corner, I let out a gasp. The Stone's backyard was a dreamland for kids - featuring a detailed treehouse, a shimmering pool, and a miniature putting green "This is Beautiful!" I exclaimed. Lily turned back, a hint of pride in her voice. "Dad designed it all himself. He says it's important to have places to play and explore." Alexander emitted a warm chuckle that caused a comforting sensation, sending a surprising tingle down my spine. "Why have all this space if we're not going to utilize it?" I sensed his gentle touch on my lower back as he guided us to the treehouse. Although it was a minor gesture, it resulted in a lasting feeling of warmth. I took a deep breath, reminding myself to maintain professionalism. “Let's find out who can reach the treehouse first!” Said Lily as she took of racing to the treehouse. Leo's hand slipped from mine as he raced after his sister. "Not fair! You got a head start!" I laughed, watching them scramble up the ladder. "Should we follow them?" I asked Alexander. He smiled a touch of sadness in his eyes. "In a minute. I wanted to thank you, Clara. The children... they haven't been this excited in a long time." I felt a little lump form in my throat. "They're wonderful children. You should be proud." "I am," he said softly. "Every day. But it's been hard, since..." He trailed off, pain flashing across his face. I wanted to reach out, to offer comfort, but I held back. This was my employer, not a friend. I had to remember that. "DAD! CLARA!" Lily's voice rang out from the treehouse. "You have to say the password!" Alexander's somber expression melted into a grin. "Shall we?" I nodded, following him to the base of the tree. "Password?" Lily called down imperiously. I cupped my hands around my mouth. "TRAMPLES!" I shouted, drawing out the word. Leo's giggles drifted down from above. "That's right! Come on up!" As I climbed the ladder, I heard Alexander say behind me. "I don't suppose you would be so kind to tell me the password?" he asked teasingly. I looked down, meeting his eyes. For a moment, the world seemed to have tilt on its axis. "Sorry," I managed. "Top secret information. You'll have to ask your kids." He laughed, the sound rich and full. "Fair enough. I suppose I will have to earn their trust, just like you did then." Climbing up into the treehouse, I was impressed by the craftsmanship. It resembled a miniature home, furnished with padded seats and a petite table. "What do you think?" Leo asked eagerly. "It's incredible," I said sincerely. "You two are so lucky to have a big space like this." Lily's face fell slightly. "Mom helped design it," she said quietly. "Before..." The mood in the treehouse shifted, a somber note creeping in. I searched for a way to lift their spirits without dismissing their grief. "I bet she'd be so happy to see you enjoying it," I said gently. "Why don't you tell me your favorite things about it? I'd love to hear all about it." As the twins launched into an enthusiastic explanation of secret compartments and pulley systems, I caught Alexander's eye. He mouthed a silent 'thank you,' his expression grateful. I smiled in return, and then focused completely on the children. We explored every corner of the treehouse, told jokes, and played a quick game of I Spy for the next hour. While climbing down, I caught Leo whispering to Lily, "I think I like her.” Lily shushed at him, but I saw the small smile playing at the corners of her mouth. Alexander stood at the bottom of the ladder, waiting for us. He asked, "Who is prepared for a glass of lemonade?" Me!" both twins shouted in excitement, racing toward the house. I laughed, watching them go. "They're pretty incredible," I said to Alexander. He nodded, his eyes following his children. "They are. And after a long time, this place finally feels like home again.” The words were suspended in the space between us, filled with emotions. I swallowed hard, trying to remind myself once again of the boundaries I needed to maintain. "Come on," Alexander said, his hand finding the small of my back again as he guided me toward the house. "I think we could all use a cool drink. Yeah?"I nodded, unable to find my voice. While we were walking, I tried so hard to concentrate on the sound of the kid's giggles coming from the house. However, my mind was still focused on the feeling of Alexander's hand and how my heart beat faster when he touched me.
