I stared at the message on my phone, reading it again just to be sure I hadn’t misunderstood. It was still the same. Ben hadn’t written much, just a short, infuriatingly calm message saying that Aleric had taken over the Rufous Moon Pack and that they would be staying longer than planned.
That was it, no explanation, no details. Nothing. When I tried calling him back, the call rang out unanswered. I lowered the phone slowly, frustration twisting in my chest.
I shouldn’t have agreed to stay behind. I should have insisted on going with them. Maybe my presence wouldn’t have stopped Aleric or Axel from doing whatever they had already planned, but at least I could have tried. I could have been the voice of reason.
Ben and Daniel… they weren’t the best people to keep Aleric in check. T
