The next morning, my wrist was black and blue from Dominic’s grip. I covered the ugly bruises with a thick gold bracelet that Beta Thomas gave me.
"Smile, Evangeline," Thomas whispered, pushing me toward the heavy oak doors of the pack dining room.
"If his brothers see you sweat, they will take advantage of you. Remember, you are the boss now. Act like it."
My heart drummed against my ribs. I felt sick to my stomach, I was just a low-level omega, but today, I had to pretend to be the queen of the strongest Lycan pack in the world.
Thomas pushed the doors open.
Three men sat around a long table filled with food. The air in the room was so thick with alpha pressure it made my knees want to buckle. They all stopped eating and glared at me.
"So, this is the trash you bought from the slums, Thomas?"
The voice came from the oldest brother, Killian. He looked just like Dominic, but his eyes were cruel, not kingly.
He threw his silver fork onto his plate with a loud clang. "A human-born omega? You expect us to bow to her?"
"She is legal, Killian," Thomas said, his voice firm as he guided me to the empty chair at the head of the table.
The chair belonged to Dominic. Sitting in it felt like a crime. "The pack magic accepted her. Her signature is on the corporate boards. She is the proxy Luna."
The youngest brother, a young guy named Julian with a silver piercing in his brow, let out a loud laugh.
"A proxy puppet, you mean. Look at her. She’s shaking like a wet leaf."
I gripped the sides of the velvet chair to hide my trembling hands. I looked down at the plate of food, completely unable to eat.
“Don't let them see you look down.”
I gasped, my eyes flying open wide.
The voice exploded inside my brain again. It was deep, dark, and smooth as velvet. It was Dominic.
I looked around the room in absolute panic. Nobody else reacted. Thomas was busy glaring at Killian. The brothers were eating.
“They cannot hear me,” the voice inside my head said. It felt warm, wrapping around my mind like a heavy blanket.
“Only you can hear me, Evangeline, Breathe. If you panic, they win.”
How are you doing this? I thought back, screaming the words inside my own mind.
“Our souls are locked together now,” Dominic explained, his voice low and comforting.
“My body is dead to the world, but my mind lives through yours, Sit up straight. Look Killian in the eyes and tell him to shut his mouth.”
My breath hitched. I was losing my mind. My comatose husband was talking to me from his hospital bed, coaching me through a pack war.
"What's wrong, girl?" Killian sneered, leaning forward. His heavy alpha scent blasted across the table, trying to force me to bow.
"Did the big chair scare you? Leave the contract. Go back to your poor family before we break you."
“He is weak, Evangeline,” Dominic whispered in my mind. “He uses loud words because he knows he doesn't have the crown. Show him who owns this house.”
The fear in my chest suddenly turned into hot anger. Dominic’s voice in my head gave me a strange wave of strength.
I sat up straight and looked directly into Killian’s cold eyes. "My name is Evangeline Brooks," I said, my voice surprisingly loud and clear. "And you will address me as Luna."
The dining room went dead silent. Julian stopped chewing, Even Thomas looked shocked.
Killian’s face turned red with rage. He slammed both hands onto the table and stood up. The wooden table cracked under his power.
"You little b***h…"
"Sit down, Killian," the middle brother, Elijah, finally spoke. He had glasses on and looked like a lawyer, but his aura was sharp.
"She has the legal power to cut our corporate funding. If she drops the Silver-Crest stocks, we lose everything."
Killian growled, his eyes flashing yellow, but he slowly sat back down. He glared at me like he wanted to rip my throat out. "This isn't over, omega. You won't survive a week in this house."
“Good girl,” Dominic’s dark voice chuckled inside my head. The sound made a weird shiver run down my spine. “Now, eat your breakfast, Evangeline. We have a company to run.”
Are you going to be with me the whole day? I asked him mentally, taking a slow sip of water to calm my throat.
“Every second,” Dominic promised. “They think I am asleep, but together, we are going to take everything from them.”
I took a deep breath, picked up my fork, and forced myself to eat, realizing my life would never be the same again.
