"They are going to test you today, Evangeline," Thomas said, his voice tense as the elevator shot up to the top floor of the Silver-Crest skyscraper.
"Killian and Elijah called an emergency board meeting. They want to prove you don't know anything about running a multi-billion-dollar company."
I smoothed down the sleek black suit Thomas had bought me. It felt like armor, but it didn't stop my heart from thumping wildly against my ribs.
"What do I do if they ask about the budget?"
"Don't say a word. Let me handle the speaking," Thomas replied as the doors slid open.
The boardroom was massive, filled with glass walls overlooking the city. Twenty high-level alphas in expensive suits sat around a giant mahogany table.
Killian sat near the head of the table, a smug smile plastered across his face. Elijah sat next to him, tapping a stack of legal documents.
I took a deep breath, walked to the main chair at the center, and sat down.
"Glad you could join us, Luna," Killian said, spitting out the title like a dirty word.
"Since you are now the official head of this company, we need your immediate approval on a major business deal."
Elijah slid a thick contract across the table to me. "This is the Moon-Ridge territory merger. If we sign it, we give up fifty percent of our northern forests to a rival pack. We need your signature to seal the deal."
Thomas lunged forward, grabbing the paper before I could touch it. "Wait.. This wasn't on the schedule. We need to review this."
"The Luna is the boss, Thomas, not you," Killian snapped, his eyes flashing a dangerous yellow as he glared at me.
"Sign it, Evangeline. Unless you admit you are too stupid to understand pack business."
All the alphas around the table stared at me, waiting for me to c***k. The heavy pressure of their combined power filled the room, making the air feel thick and hard to breathe.
Panic started to choke me. If I signed it, I might ruin Dominic's company, If I didn't, they would expose me as a fraud.
“Do not sign it.” Dominic’s voice boomed inside my mind, clear and commanding. I almost jumped in my seat, but I forced myself to stay still.
“Look at page fourteen,” the voice instructed, its dark warmth instantly washing away my panic. “The small print at the bottom. Read it out loud.”
I reached out, took the paper back from Thomas, and slowly flipped through the pages.
My fingers trembled slightly, but I hid it by turning the sheets quickly. Finally, I found page fourteen. My eyes scanned the tiny text at the very bottom.
A wave of shock went through me.
I looked up from the paper and glared directly at Elijah. "Page fourteen, section four."
Elijah’s confident smile instantly vanished. He stiffened in his chair.
"What about it?" Killian asked, frowning at his brother.
"This contract doesn't just merge the forests," I said, my voice ringing out clearly through the quiet room.
"It transfers all of the Silver-Crest bank accounts to an offshore shell company owned entirely by Killian and Elijah. You aren't merging with a rival pack. You are stealing from your own brother while he lies in a hospital bed."
The boardroom erupted into loud murmurs. The other board members looked at the brothers in shock.
Killian slammed his fist on the table, standing up in a rage. "You lying little…."
"Sit down, Killian," I cut him off, slamming the folder shut with a loud slap.
"This meeting is adjourned, and if either of you tries to bring a fraudulent contract to my table again, I will use my legal power as Luna to strip you of your pack status and throw you out on the street."
Killian looked like he wanted to tear me to pieces, but the other board members were already standing up, whispering and shaking their heads.
Thomas looked at me with wide, completely stunned eyes.
As the room cleared out, Dominic’s deep, velvety laugh echoed right inside my skull.
“Very impressive, Evangeline,” his voice whispered, filled with pride. “You handle my brothers perfectly. Keep this up, and we might just survive this war.”
