That night, the pack house felt empty. I couldn't sleep a wink.
The memory of Killian’s angry face kept flashing in my mind, making me toss and turn. I needed to see Dominic. He was the only person in this giant mansion who didn't want me dead.
I sneaked down to the secret medical wing. The two guards at the door bowed respectfully this time. They didn't stop me, They saw what I did to Killian in the boardroom.
I slipped inside and shut the heavy metal door.
Dominic lay the same as before. The machines beeped slowly, the green lines moving up and down. I walked to the side of his bed and slowly sat down on the edge.
"How are you doing this?" I whispered into the quiet room. I reached out and gently touched his massive, warm hand.
This time, there was no painful shock. A deep, comforting warmth spread through my fingers, making the tight knot of fear in my chest loosen up.
“I am trapped, Evangeline,” his voice echoed inside my head. It sounded a bit tired tonight, but still deep and smooth.
“The dark magic poison keeps my body locked. But my wolf spirit is fully awake. Our minds bonded the exact second you signed that marriage contract.”
"Can the doctors find a cure?" I asked, looking down at his handsome, unmoving face.
“No. The poison is rare. My medical team doesn't even know what it is,” Dominic replied. A dark wave of anger rippled through our mental link.
“Killian got it from our enemies. He wants me gone so he can take the throne. But he is too stupid to realize he is ruining the pack.”
"He tried to steal all the corporate funds today," I told him, looking at our joined hands. "Elijah helped him."
“I heard you,” Dominic said. I could almost feel the phantom touch of his hand squeezing mine back in my mind.
“You were brilliant, Evangeline. You used my own words to crush them. I picked the right bride.”
A small smile touched my lips. "I was terrified. My heart was beating so loud I thought they would hear it."
“You didn't show it, That is what matters. An Alpha protects the pack, but a Luna protects the Alpha, You did that today.”
Before I could reply, the heavy electronic door behind me clicked loudly.
I quickly pulled my hand away from Dominic and stood up, turning around.
Thomas walked into the room, but he wasn't alone. A beautiful woman walked in right behind him. She wore a stunning, expensive red dress and high heels that clicked sharply against the tile floor.
She had long, flawless blonde hair and piercing blue eyes that looked at me like I was dirt on her shoe.
"Who is she, Thomas?" the woman demanded, her voice sharp and high-class. She didn't even look at Dominic. She just glared at me. "And why is she sitting on my fiancé's bed?"
"Evangeline, this is Lady Rebecca," Thomas said, looking incredibly stressed. He kept wiping sweat from his forehead. "She is the daughter of the Alpha Council Leader. And... she was Dominic's fiancée before the accident."
Rebecca walked right past me, her heavy perfume filling the room and choking out the natural scent of the medical ward.
She stopped at the side of the bed and looked down at Dominic with a bored expression.
"The elders sent me, Thomas," Rebecca said, crossing her arms. She finally turned her cold blue eyes back to me.
"They heard Killian's rumors. They want to know why a low-level, nameless omega from the slums is suddenly signing corporate documents for the Silver-Crest empire."
"She is the legal proxy Luna, Rebecca," Thomas explained quickly. "The marriage contract is valid."
"A marriage contract signed with a vegetable?" Rebecca let out a sharp, nasty laugh. She walked right up to me, standing so close I could see the anger in her eyes.
"Listen to me, little girl. You are a temporary placeholder, A fake I am the one the elders chose for him.
The moment Dominic dies or wakes up you will be thrown right back into the gutter where you belong."
My heart hammered against my ribs, but I forced myself to stand my ground. I didn't look down.
“Tell her to leave my room,” Dominic’s growl exploded inside my head, so loud and angry it made my skull ache.
“She never cared about me. She only wants the crown. Push her out, Evangeline.”
I swallowed the lump of fear in my throat. I looked Rebecca straight in the eye. "Lady Rebecca," I said, keeping my voice calm and steady. "Dominic is my husband now. The pack magic accepted me, not you. This is my pack house, and this is my husband's room. You can leave now."
Rebecca’s jaw dropped in shock. Her face turned red with fury. She raised her hand as if she wanted to slap me.
"How dare you.."
"Rebecca, please," Thomas stepped between us, catching her arm gently. "Let's discuss this in the main hall, The Luna has had a long day."
Rebecca snatched her arm away from Thomas, giving me one last death glare. "Enjoy your little game while it lasts, Evangeline. The Council is meeting tomorrow. I will make sure they strip you of that title by sunset."
She spun on her heels and marched out of the room, the door slamming shut behind her.
I let out a shaky breath, my knees suddenly feeling weak. I turned back to the bed and looked at Dominic.
“Don't listen to her,” Dominic’s voice whispered in my mind, soothing my racing heart.
“The Council cannot touch you as long as I am alive. But tomorrow is going to be a war. Are you ready to fight with me, wife?”
I looked at his still face, gripped his warm hand again, and nodded. "I'm ready."
