A younger Nia and her brother Jacob were playing a game when things took a turn for the worse. Jacob was being scolded for something Nia had also done, but her parents were only punishing him. Nia couldn't bear to see her little brother upset and took it upon herself to speak up. "Mum, it was me too. Punish me as well, not just my brother," she pleaded.
Her mum looked at her with disappointment. "Nia, we've told you before to keep your brother under control. We know how much you care for him, and for that, we tolerate him."
Nia was hurt by her mother's words. "But Mum, he's your son too. Please, punish me as well," she insisted. However, her mother refused to listen and walked away, leaving Nia feeling helpless.
Nia's older sister Jennifer had overheard the whole conversation and knew there was no point in defending their brother. She had seen how their mother always favored Nia and how Nia never stood up for Jacob.
Nia went to find her little brother and found him crying. "Hey, look... I'm sorry," she said, feeling guilty about what happened.
Jacob sobbed, "No, you're not. You love being Mum's favorite."
Nia's heart sank at her brother's words. "No, I don't," she replied softly. "We're siblings, me, you, and Jennifer. We all look out for each other. Nothing too bad can happen if we all stick together."
Jacob looked up at her with hopeful eyes. "You promise?"
Nia smiled and took his hand. "I promise."
But promises can be broken.
One day later, Nia and Jacob were walking around with a search party looking for their sister Jennifer. "JENNIFER!" Nia yelled, her voice trembling with fear. They searched for hours, but there was no sign of Jennifer. As the days passed, the search party dwindled, and it was only Nia who continued to search. Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and months turned into years.
Nia's legs ached from all the walking, but she refused to give up hope. She checked every street corner, every alleyway, hoping to find her sister. But as time went on, Nia began to lose hope. She was exhausted and emotionally drained, but she couldn't bear the thought of never finding her sister.
Years passed, and Nia was still searching.
Her determination never wavered, and she refused to give up hope. She knew in her heart that her sister was still alive, somewhere out there, waiting for her.
