Chapter 4

Lyra’s hands shook as she ran her fingers over the sigil on her chest. Its heat pulsed faintly, like it was aware of her thoughts, her fear, her curiosity. The shadows in the room twitched in response, brushing the walls, curling around her ankles. This isn’t just a mark. This is a leash… or a lifeline. She took a tentative step forward, willing the darkness to rise at her command. A shadow lifted from the floor, thin at first, then thickening, curling around her fingers like smoke obeying her breath. Her heart hammered. “Not bad,” Kael’s voice purred from the balcony above, startling her. “You feel it. That’s the bond responding. You’re stronger than I thought.” Lyra spun. “Stronger than you thought?” she snapped. He leaned casually against the railing, one leg draped over the other, cloak like liquid shadow pooling around him. “You should know by now, never underestimate me. Or your mark.” Her pulse raced, but she forced herself to focus. “So… the shadows obey me?” Kael’s silver eyes glimmered, amused. “They obey the bond. You are tethered to me, Lyra. Every emotion you feel, every thought you can’t control...they ripple through me. And I… through you.” Lyra swallowed. “So you feel everything I feel?” A faint smirk tugged at his lips. “Not everything. I spare you some torment… for now.” Her cheeks burned. “You’re annoying.” “Perhaps. Or perhaps… irresistible,” he countered, voice low, playful, and impossible to ignore. Lyra bit back a retort, instead taking a deep breath and focusing again. She extended her hand, willing a shadow to leap from the floor. This time it obeyed more fully, stretching like black silk toward her palm. The movement was smooth, yet alive, responding to her intent. Kael’s eyes widened slightly, not in surprise, but something older, almost… pride? “Clever girl.” “Why me?” she asked suddenly, frustration and fear mingling. “Why now? Why am I the one tethered to you?” Kael descended the balcony in a few silent strides, stopping just short of her. Shadows clung to his boots, alive and coiling around him like serpents. “Because you survived the ritual. They tried to spill your blood… and instead, you awakened the bond. That sigil isn’t just a mark; it’s recognition. Your spark, your courage, your defiance, it called to me.” Her stomach churned. “So this is all… my fault?” He chuckled softly, brushing a strand of hair from his eyes. “Not your fault. Just destiny… and a touch of chaos. I’ve been bound by shadows for centuries. You… you are the first in a long, long time to call me fully awake.” Lyra’s breath caught. She had survived the Blood Moon, discovered the Shadow Prince, and now… somehow, she had power of her own. Power that Kael had acknowledged, teasingly, dangerously. The room trembled faintly as shadows brushed her arms, reacting to her rising heartbeat. Kael’s gaze softened for the briefest moment. “The bond is stronger than most realize. And it’s dangerous. Both for you… and for me.” Lyra stepped back, hands trembling. “Dangerous?” He smirked, stepping closer, shadows brushing against her like ink on skin. “Yes. But perhaps… worth it.” Her pulse jumped, not entirely from fear.
