The cell door creaked open.
I didn’t look up, not right away. I knew it was him. I could feel his presence like a storm rolling in.
His footsteps weren’t like others. It was different.
He didn’t speak. Just stood there in the doorway like a shadow I couldn’t run from.
Then he stepped forward. Closer.
I had tried to fight my way out earlier. I can’t deal with the accusations on me. But I was no match for the prison guards.
I had claw marks on my arms from fighting the guards. Blood crusted on my lips from refusing their food. But my spine still straightened the
second he stepped in.
I was scared of what I was becoming.
I’m not just human anymore.
“You’ve got fire,” he said, voice low. “I’ll give you that.”
“You’ve got arrogance. So we’re even.”
He smirked, just a flicker. “Do you know what you are yet?”
“I’m a prisoner in your dungeon. That’s all I know. A tool to please your court. Admit it. You don’t want them to think you’re powerless right?”
Wrong answer.
In two strides, he was in front of me. My back hit the cold stone wall, his hand slamming beside my head. Not touching, but close enough I
could feel the heat radiating off his skin.
“You’re not just a prisoner, Calia.”
I flinched at the sound of my name on his lips. It felt too intimate. Like he was tasting it.
And it sounded….. nice.
You’re not just a rogue either. I saw your eyes shift in the trial. No one else saw it, but I did. You didn’t even know what was happening to you,
did you?”
My breathing hitched. “Get away from me.”
But he didn’t.
Instead he leaned in closer.
“You shifted partially without the moon, Do you know what that means?” he said, voice like gravel and smoke. “That doesn’t happen. Not
unless…”
“Unless what?”
His gaze burned into mine. “Unless your blood is older than any Alpha’s. Older than mine. You aren’t human Calia.”
I laughed, sharp and biter.
“What are am I then? If I’m not human.” I asked.
“That’s what I’m trying to figure out. There’s a mystery behind you.” His response was calm.
“Is that why you’re keeping me like some caged animal? Trying to figure out how to break me?”
“No,” he said, deadly soft. “I’m trying not to want you.”
Silence fell between us like a blade.
I hated how my chest clenched at those words.
I hated how that melted me.
I hated the flicker of heat between my legs, the one I hadn’t felt in years.
What the hell is going on
“You think this is lust?” I snapped. “You think I’d ever let you touch me?”
He leaned in, lips brushing the shell of my ear. “You already feel it, don’t you? That pull between us. You don’t understand it yet, but it’s there.
Accept it.”
“Bullshit.”
“Say it all you want,” he murmured. “But when the next full moon comes, we’ll know what this is all about, and it’s in two days”
He reached out finally, and brushed his fingers across my cheek.
I hated how it lit a fuse beneath my skin.
He didn’t move, but something shifted in him. A war behind those golden eyes. I think it took him courage to say what he was about to say.
“There’s an ancient rite,” he said slowly. “One older than any Alpha law. Forbidden now. And dangerous.”
“Why?”
“Because it feeds on blood and soul. If we perform it…” His jaw clenched. “There’s no going back.”
“What kind of rite?” I whispered.
He stared at me like a man on the edge of ruin. “One that could awaken the wolf in you. Or destroy what’s left of your humanity.”
Then came the silence.
‘one that could awaken the wolf in you. Or destroy what’s left of your humanity’ This kept on replaying in my head.
Am I truly one of them?
“I can help you,” he said, breaking the silence. “I can unlock what’s inside you.”
“And what happens when it kills me?”
His voice was nothing but breath now. “Then I’ll die beside you.”
I woke up to the sound of keys.
I didn’t want to know who it was anymore, cause it won’t be any good.
“These are for you” said a litle voice.
I looked, only to find a litle girl in front of me. She wasn’t like the others. She was calm.
I looked at the tray, and it was some new pieces of clothing, and a porridge right besides it.
“What’s your name?” I asked.
She looked down before answering.
“Maya. I’m Maya.” She replied, her voice as gentle as ever. From her body, I think she’s barely 10 years.
“Why did you bring these yourself? What of the grownups?”
“They are all terrified by you. The Alpha is busy with work, and Beta isn’t around, so there’s no one to give these to you.” She answered.
“Don’t I scare you? All those rumors about me killing your packs, aren’t you afraid?”
She kept quiet for a while, before answering.
“ I am.”
“Then why did you come?”
“Alpha told me not to be afraid. He said you weren’t dangerous, and you won’t harm me. I believe him.”
Does he really trust me?
“Why do you trust him so much?” I asked
“Because I know he would do anything to keep us safe. He saved me when I was much younger, so I trust him with all my heart. I’m from his
enemies wolf pack, my mother escaped with me. She was later killed while we were escaping. Our Alpha wasn’t a good one. He kills without
mercy, and listens to no one. My mother was accused of leaking information about our pack and we were ordered to be executed. She took me
and ran away. After my mum died, I hid beside some trees, hoping they wouldn’t see me. But the they did. I was about to be killed, that was
when Alpha saved me. He took my hand and told me everything was okay.” The litle girl said. I could see the tears in her eyes but she was
holding it in.
What a brave one.
“Thank you.” I told her
Maya nodded and left.
What she said made me see another version of Ronan.
I thought he was a douche.
