Chapter Five :Dangerous Proximity

1768 Words
The silence inside Adrian Vale’s office lingered long after his words faded. Some people stay because they are drawn to something they should not be I stared at the tablet screen in front of me, but the design lines had started to blur together Because his words didn’t feel like a general statement. They felt personal and the way he had looked at me when he said them made my chest tighten in a way I didn’t fully understand. I forced my attention back to the tablet. Professional,Focus. The design revisions were finished, and the structural issue had been corrected. But Adrian hadn’t said anything else yet he simply stood beside the desk, watching not in a rushed way not impatient Just observing. It was the kind of quiet attention that made it impossible to forget he was there finally, I cleared my throat softly. The correction is finished. Adrian leaned forward slightly, placing one hand on the desk as he examined the screen again. Our shoulders nearly brushed I became suddenly aware of how close he was standing the warmth of his presence the faint scent of his cologne. Everything about him felt controlled, composed, yet somehow overwhelming at the same time he studied the design carefully then nodded once. “Better.” Relief slipped quietly through my chest I placed the stylus down. thank you for pointing it out. He straightened slowly for a moment, neither of us moved. Then Adrian walked around the desk, returning to the other side. The distance between us widened again, and I felt an odd shift in the atmosphere. Like the tension that had been building quietly in the room had finally been given space to breathe. You have strong instincts, Miss Rivers, he said. I stood up from the chair. “Thank you.” but instincts are only valuable when they are disciplined. His voice carried the same calm authority as always.I nodded I understand. For a brief moment, Adrian’s expression softened slightly. It was subtle, almost unnoticeable but it changed the sharp lines of his face in a way that made him look unexpectedly human then the moment disappeared. He returned to his usual composed demeanor. You may go the words were simple professional. Exactly what they should have been yet for some reason, I hesitated. Just for a second something about the earlier conversation still lingered in my mind. But this was not a place for curiosity He was my boss the CEO. The most powerful man in the building and I was just an assistant designer. Have a good day, Mr. Vale, I said. His gaze followed me as I walked toward the door. I could feel it even without turning around. And when I finally stepped outside the office, the atmosphere of the design department immediately rushed back around me the soft clicking of keyboards the quiet conversations the hum of office life. But the moment people noticed I had come from the CEO’s office, several curious glances appeared. Mia rolled her chair closer to my desk the moment I sat down. Well? she whispered I tried to look casual as I opened my design files. It was just about a revision she raised an eyebrow. “That’s it?” Yes. Her suspicious expression made it clear she didn’t fully believe me. No offense, Elena, she continued quietly, but the CEO doesn’t usually personally review assistant designers’ work. I shrugged lightly Maybe he’s paying more attention to the new product line. Mia leaned back in her chair, still studying me “Maybe.” But the curiosity remained in her eyes and honestly, part of me understood why Adrian Vale was known for many things Sharp business instincts Uncompromising leadership Unpredictable strategic decisions. But one thing he was not known for was personal involvement with lower-level employees. Yet in the past week, he had called me into his office twice even I didn’t fully understand why. I tried to push the thought aside and focus on my work. But for the rest of the afternoon, my concentration kept drifting back to the moment in his office back to his quiet voice back to the strange tension that had filled the room and the more I thought about it… the more unsettled I felt. Later that evening, most of the design department had already left. The lights in the office had dimmed slightly as the automatic evening system activated but I remained at my desk. A new design concept was open on my screen, and I was determined to finish it before going home. The quiet of the nearly empty office helped me focus. Or at least it usually did. Tonight, however, my mind kept wandering I rubbed my eyes and leaned back in my chair maybe I should just finish this tomorrow I reached for my bag. Then suddenly footsteps,Slow measured echoing softly across the office floor my head lifted instantly. At this hour, there were usually only a few people left in the building Security, Cleaning staff maybe an executive working late. The footsteps stopped near my desk I looked up And my breath caught slightly Adrian Vale stood a few feet away. He had removed his suit jacket, leaving the sleeves of his white shirt rolled neatly to his forearms. The more relaxed look somehow made him appear even more intimidating You’re still here, he said. His voice carried the same calm tone as always, but there was a hint of curiosity in it. I wanted to finish a concept draft, I explained. He glanced briefly at the screen you stay late often? Sometimes he studied the design for a moment. Then his eyes returned to me you should be careful with that. I frowned slightly “With what?” Overworking the response surprised me. Of all the things I expected him to say, that was not one of them.I thought CEOs liked employees who worked late. A faint hint of amusement flickered across his expression. I prefer employees who work intelligently. He stepped closer to the desk again that dangerous proximity returned Fatigue damages creativity. His eyes moved across the design on the screen again you’re designing too cautiously tonight. I blinked in surprise. How can you tell? The lines he gestured toward the tablet. They’re controlled, but hesitant I looked at the design again. and reluctantly realized he was right. Adrian straightened. You’re capable of better something about the quiet confidence in his voice stirred a small spark of determination inside me. I’ll fix it he watched me for a moment then he said something unexpected. Show me my eyes widened slightly. “Now?” “Yes.” My heart began beating faster I picked up the stylus and began adjusting the design. At first my movements were careful. Precise. But after a few minutes, I stopped overthinking. The lines flowed more naturally. Freely. Adrian remained beside the desk the entire time. Watching. Silent. But his attention was intense enough that I could feel it like warmth against my skin. Finally, I leaned back again. “There.” He examined the new design quietly. Then nodded once. “That’s the version you were trying to create.” A small smile tugged at the corner of my mouth. “Maybe I just needed a second opinion.” His gaze shifted to me. “Or confidence.” For a moment, we simply looked at each other. The office around us was silent. Dark windows reflected faint city lights. And the distance between us suddenly felt very small. Adrian’s voice lowered slightly. “You underestimate your abilities.” My breath caught. “I don’t think I do.” “You do.” His tone wasn’t harsh. Just certain. “People who doubt their skill hesitate.” His eyes held mine steadily. “You hesitate.” I swallowed. Maybe he wasn’t entirely wrong. But hearing him say it so directly made my chest tighten. “Then I’ll try to stop,” I said quietly. Something unreadable passed through his expression. Then he stepped back. The moment broke. “You should go home, Miss Rivers.” I blinked. “Right.” I quickly gathered my things. As I turned toward the elevators, I glanced back once. Adrian was still standing beside my desk. Looking at the screen where the design remained open. Lost in thought. The elevator ride down felt strangely quiet. My reflection in the mirrored wall looked slightly flushed. I pressed my fingers lightly to my temples. What was happening? Why did every conversation with Adrian Vale feel like it carried some hidden meaning? And more importantly… Why did I keep thinking about it afterward? When the elevator doors opened in the lobby, I stepped outside and headed toward the building exit. The cool night air greeted me the moment I stepped onto the street. I exhaled slowly. Trying to clear my mind. But just as I began walking toward the subway entrance, a sleek black car pulled up beside the curb. The rear window lowered smoothly. And Adrian Vale’s voice came from inside. “Miss Rivers.” I froze. He looked at me through the open window. “Get in.” My brain stalled for a moment. “I’m sorry?” “It’s late,” he said calmly. “I’ll have my driver take you home.” My heart began racing again. “That’s not necessary.” “It wasn’t a suggestion.” His tone wasn’t harsh. Just firm. The driver had already stepped out to open the back door. For a second, I hesitated. Every logical instinct in my head told me this was a terrible idea. But refusing the CEO in the middle of the street also felt impossible. So slowly, I stepped toward the car. And got inside. The door closed behind me. The car began moving almost immediately. Adrian sat beside me in the quiet backseat, looking out the window. For several minutes, neither of us spoke. The city lights flickered past the glass like scattered stars. Finally, I broke the silence. “You really didn’t have to do this.” He didn’t look away from the window. “I know.” That answer only confused me more. Then he turned his head slightly, meeting my gaze. “But I wanted to.” The simple honesty in his voice sent a strange ripple through my chest. Because suddenly… This didn’t feel like a professional gesture anymore. And deep down, I had a feeling we had just crossed another invisible line. One that would be much harder to step back from.
