I ran until the moon crossed the sky, and the broken bond gave me nothing the whole way. The snow came up to my chest in the low ground, and the frozen crust cut my pads when I crossed the open fields. I did not feel the cuts. The only thing I could feel was the empty place under my ribs where Selene's heartbeat used to live, a hollow that whistled every time I breathed. I crossed the pack lands again and again, my nose to the ground. Her scent was everywhere and nowhere. It hung in the frozen breath of the garden where she used to work, faded on the railing of the bridge she crossed to the infirmary, and died completely at the boundary stone where her blood trail ended. I stood over that stone and pushed my will into the broken bond until my head throbbed. *Selene. Answer me. Selene.*
