Around midday the next day, Vanessa was finally released from the care of Dr. Wellington. Vanessa and Caleb were now sitting in the back of an Uber in New York City on their way to the hotel room Caleb rented for the night. They needed a plan to figure out what’s next, but having a place to stay for the night was just as important.
It felt strange to Vanessa to be doing something so normal after everything she’d been through. Back before she met Caleb, this was almost a daily occurrence. Getting an Uber or taking the Subway to get around while the busy streets of New York bustled by. Now it just seemed so foreign.
So what now? Vanessa mindlinked. She doubted their Uber driver was a spy for Maxin, but you never know and it was better to be safe than sorry.
