Chapter 2: Absolutely Fabulous!

Jade reflected, it had changed that first time she had walked into Cherry's school to dance. She admired her and it had been there that she had first danced for Davidzki. The memory still vivid at her mind. How terrified she had been! Cold sweat prickling tbrough her skin , she had stood there in front of a man who had been heralded as the finest dancer of the decade . A master , a legend. Nicholas Davidzki, who had partnered only the most gifted ballerinas, including Cherry Sean. Jade's mind was being heightened she thought not to be humilated in front of this man. Indeed, he had come to Tennesse to convince Cherry to return to New york as the star in a ballet he had written. Jade had been overwhelmed by hus presence and almost too stunned to move when he had ordered her to dance for him. But he had been charming . A smile touched Jade's mouth as she leaned her head at the back of the sofa forgetting the television. And who, she thought lazily, could be more charming than Nick when he chose to be? She had obeyed, losing herself in the movement and the music. Then he had spoken those simple, stunning words; "When you come to New York, come to me." She had been very young and had thought of Nicholas Davidzki as a name to be whispered reverently she had been drawn to his words. She would have danced barefoot down Broadway if he had told her to. She would do anything. She had worked hard to please him, terrified of the sting of his temper, being overbearing, unable to bear the coldness of his disapproval. And he had pushed her. Jade remembered how he had been constantly, mercilessly demanding. There had been nights she had curled up in bed too exhausted to even weep and let her feelings drained from her. But then he would smile or toss off a compliment, and every moment of pain would vanish. He had awaken her emotions but not yet realized it by herself. She had danced with him, fought with him, laughed with him, watching the gradual changes in him over the years, and still , there was an elusive quality about him. She might be fantasizing him. Her curiousity growed each time she was with him. Perhaps that was the secret of his attraction for women, she thought endlessly: the subtle air of mystery, his foreign accent his reticence about his past. She had gotten over her infatuation with him years ago. She smiled, remembering the intensity of her crush on him. He hadn't appeared to even notice it. She had been scarcely eighteen and she secretely admired him. He'd been nearly thirty-three and surrounded by beautiful women. And still is, she reminded herself she could not possibly be liked by him. Smiling in rueful amusement as she stood to stretch she thought that Davidzki was an impossible dream prince charming for her own likes. The cat ,now dislodged from her lap stalked huffily away she turned off the television and washed the bowl at the sink. My heart's whole and safe, Jade decided. Perhaps too safe. She thought of Raynold. Well, it couldn't be helped it was what it was then. She yawned and stretched again. And there was that early class tomorrow morning that she needed to be prepared of. Jade woke up early and prepared everything she needed for the long rehearsals for the day. She checked herself in the mirror and decided all was set and ready to go. Jade’s T-shirt was dampened with sweat. She was so focused with the rehearsal beacause the choreography for The Dark Flowers was complicated and strenuous. This was the choreography of Nick. She took a much-needed breather at the barre. The rest of the cast was scattered around the rehearsal hall, either waiting or dancing under Nick’s strict instructions, as she had been waiting for the next move. Time passed by and Jade had not realized that she had already worked a long two-hour morning class. The long , loose T-shirt she wore over her tights was darkened by her perspiration: a few loose tendrils of her hair had escaped from her tightly secured bun. Still observing Nick demonstrate a move, any thought of fatigue drained from her. He was amazingly, absolutely fabulous, she thought. As an innovative director of his company and as established creator of ballets, he was not needed to dance to stay in the limelight yet he danced. Jade knew, because he was born to do so. He was six footer, but his lean, wiry build gave an illusion of more height. His hair was like gold dust and curled carelessly around a face that had never completely lost its boyish aura. His mouth was beautiful, full like perfectly sculpted. When he smiled...... When he smiled, there was no resisting him. The fine lines from his eyes would spread beautifully and his large irises would become blue. Suddenly Jade was in contact with Nick eyes to eyes. Jade moved her looks sideways as she felt caught staring and felt a little ashamed but thought quickly why should she be ashamed? She was just observing? Nick giving demonstrations. Watching him again demonstrate a turn, Jade was grateful that even at his age of thirty- three, with all his other professional obligations, he still continued to dance. He stopped the pianist with a flick of his hand. “All right, children,” he said in his musically Russian-accented voice . “It could be worse.” “Jade, the pas de deux from the first act.” Jade suddenly snapped out of her thoughts and focused on the instructions given by Nick.”On earth Jade” she told herself silently. She crossed to him instantly, giving an absent brush at the locks of hair that danced around her face. Nick was a creature of moods—varied, mercurial, unexplained moods. Today he was all business posed. Jade knew how to match his temperament with her own. They touched right hands, palm to palm while facing each other. Then they began. It was more a duel of wits than an expression of romance for an early love scene. But what had Nick written this time? It was not a fairy tale ballet. He had written a passionate one. A king and a gypsy were the characters, each fiercely flesh and blood. To accommodate them the dances were exuberant and athletic. They challenged each other; he demanded, she defied. Now and then a toss of the head or a gesture of the wrist was employed to accent the mood. Jades mind went through the dance with all her might and emotions. The character of Charlotte would enrage and enrapture the king throughout the ballet. The late summer sun poured through the windows, patterning the floor. Drops of sweat trickled unheeded, unfelt, down Jade’s back as she turned in, then out of Nick’s arms. To be his partner was the greatest thrill of her life. It was at times like this, when Jade dances with Nick, that she realized she would always worship him, the dancer, the legend. He took her beyond herself, beyond what she had ever hoped to be. On her journey from student to the corps de ballet to principal dancer, Jade had danced with many partners, but none of them could touch Nicholas Davidzki for sheer brilliance and precision. She was beyond grateful, she felt pleased within her heart that she was ready to endure everything. Jade took a moment to catch her breath as the pianist turned back the pages of the score.“Where is your passion today, little one? Nick demanded while lifting his hand for hers.
