Chapter 2

Kai finished out her history class by focusing the best she could on the lecture. However, she couldn't shake the nagging feeling in her gut that someone was watching her. Her next few class flew by, then she was headed to training. It was one of the few additional courses she chose to take to add to her already impressive list of fighting skills. Her father, James, had trained both she and Ridge at young ages as he was a pack warrior. She headed into the locker room to change into her sports bra and leggings, then ran to the training field. This was a mixed class with guys and girls so Kai knew she had to bring her A game. The boys wouldn't take it easy on her in a real combat, so they wouldn't be expected to take it easy in training. Pack Deltas, Amelie and Dalton taught the class. They were two of the best fighters in the pack. Kai was psyched with anticipation with trying new techniques. "Ok class. We're going to split you up into small groups and have you spar with each other for a few a minutes. That way, we can assess your each individual skill level and can put you with others with similar skill sets. We will also be watching to see what are your strengths and weaknesses so we can improve on both. After you finish this class, you should be rather proficient in the art of fighting. This year, Alpha Samuel has decided change things up a bit and make it into a competition with surrounding allied packs. The top ten fighters in this group will go on to compete in the tournament for an opportunity to show the other packs why this pack is the absolute best at what we do." Dalton excitedly announced. "And ladies, just because the guys are bigger than us, don't let that scare you. We are smaller, faster, and can be just as ruthless as they can. If not moreso. So let's see what you can do!!!" Amelie shouted. Amelie put Kai in a group with Mena, Kevin, Carter, Taurine, and Jeff. Kai was cool with everyone but Mena. She was the stereotypical mean girl. Always looked down her nose at others. Thought she was better than everyone. Sure she was the beta's daughter, but that didn't give her free reign to be a complete and utter b***h all the time. Kai got into her stance. She was going to spar with Carter first. She always knew not to throw the first blow. "Let your opponent step out to you and open themselves up to vulnerability." She could hear her father's voice echoing in her head. Round and round they moved. It was like they were dancing an intricate routine and both refused to be anything than less than light on their feet. Carter swung. Kai got down low and swept her leg out and knocked his feet from beneath him then jumped on top of him and proceeded to pound on him until he tapped out. "Way too easy." she thought to herself. He got back on his feet for a second attempt. This time, he struck out and connected to her nose. It gave way with a satisfying crunch and blood began to pour. "OMG Kai! I am so sorry." he stammered. Kai just stared at him. "Don't be." she replied and swung back with such force that Carter flew back and hit the ground hard. "Now you can be sorry." Kai smirked. "I always knew you were a bit mannish Kai. I just didn't think you'd have bigger balls than your brother." Mena sniped. "What the f**k is that even supposed to mean Mena?" Kai inquired. "Oh, like you don't already know. We've all seen Ridge fight. He's is definitely not the warrior that your father is. Which means he must take after your mom and will be the b***h of his family when.....or IF he ever gets a mate." Mena stated. "b***h!!! Keep running your skanky ass mouth about my brother and you'll find out how my fist tastes." Kai threatened her. "LADIES ENOUGH!!!!" Dalton shouted as he got between the two girls. "I think you both need to go cool off somewhere. Mena, five miles toward the northern border and back. Kai, five miles toward the southern border. After you're done, hit the showers." Kai headed out toward the southern border as instructed by Dalton. She didn't want to get in trouble for being insubordinate on the first day of class. As she made her way out of the more inhabited area of the pack and into the forest, that eerie feeling of being watched came back. Kai glanced back over her shoulder. Nothing. She looked to both sides. Again, nothing. "Man this is weird." she thought to herself. To keep from thinking about it so much, she popped in her earbuds and turned up the volume on her music. She finished up that five miles in no time after she zoned out. She made her way back to the locker room and got her essentials together for a shower. The hot water felt good raining down on her tight muscles so she stay in longer than she probably should have. After lathering up her hair and then her body, she rinsed off and wrapped a towel around her body. She walked over to the bench by the locker where her belongings were and got dressed. She went to grab her scrunchie to re-do her hair, but she didn't see it. "Okay, I know I'm not losing it. I put it right here.", she thought. She looked everywhere it should've been, but it was gone. "No worries. I should have a spare in my satchel." she spoke to herself while digging through her bag. She found her spare and went to the mirror and got herself together. Kai stride down the hall to her locker to put her belongings inside so she could go eat lunch with the girls. She had really worked up an appetite. Out the door to the picnic area seemed like a good place to enjoy lunch. She linked with Emmy and Harper to let them know where they could find her and she started in on her food. Mom had really outdone herself. Homemade chicken pot pie and mashed potatoes with fresh strawberries and whipped cream for dessert and an ice cold bottle of water. Kai was a happy camper. "So....how has your day gone so far?" Emmy asked. "Well, I was having a great day until that b***h Mena pissed me off in training." Kai replied. "What on Earth has she done to you now?" Harper questioned. "It just her being her. That's all. She just knows what to say and do to get under my skin. I know I should just ignore her, but she makes it hard for a girl. We ended up both getting in trouble with Delta Dalton though. He made us both run five miles after sparring was over." "Well that had to be fun." Harper chided sarcastically. "It gave me that much needed time to cool down and clear my mind. Something I obviously had no clue I needed." Kai replied back. "Can I ask you guys something?" "Ask away." Emmy said. "Have you guys heard of anything out of the ordinary going on lately? Like rogue sightings or anything? I keep feeling like someone or some thing is watching me and I can't shake off the feeling." "Nope. Nothing that I've heard. Ask your dad. I'm sure he'd know if there were any rogues on pack grounds. After all, he IS a warrior and warriors handle those kind of things." Emmy responded pointedly. "She does have a valid point." Harper agreed. Even though he doesn't like to discuss work, maybe asking dad isn't such a bad idea. It's not like I'm asking him to divulge any sensitive information or anything. Worse thing that could happen is he could not tell me anything useful and my suspicions of being paranoid would pan out as being correct.
