she messaged me before she disappeared-4

Alex kept staring at the last message. “Because this won’t end the way you want it to.” The words felt heavy, different from everything she had said before. His fingers hovered over the screen as confusion filled his mind. What did that even mean? Why did it sound like a warning? He quickly typed, “What do you mean?” and waited. Seconds passed, then minutes, but there was no reply. With a sigh, Alex dropped his phone beside him. “This is getting weird,” he muttered, closing his eyes. But even in silence, her words stayed in his mind. The next morning, he woke up tired. He hadn’t slept properly again. The first thing he did was check his phone. Still no messages. For a moment, he just sat there, staring at the screen, wondering why it bothered him so much. Why was he waiting for someone he didn’t even know? At college, everything looked normal—students talking, laughing, moving around—but Alex felt disconnected, like he was present but not really part of it. He sat in the lecture hall, eyes on the board, but his mind was somewhere else. “Won’t end the way you want it to…” The sentence kept repeating in his head. After class, he walked out quietly as usual, but this time, something felt different. For a brief second, he felt like someone was watching him. He stopped walking, turned around, and looked carefully. There were students everywhere, but no one seemed unusual. No one was looking at him. “Just my imagination,” he whispered, though the feeling didn’t completely go away. That evening, Alex sat in a small café near his campus. It wasn’t crowded, and soft music played in the background. He stared at his phone again, waiting. Why am I like this? he thought. Waiting for a stranger. Someone he had never seen. Just as he was about to put his phone away, a message appeared. “You went to the café today.” Alex’s heart skipped. His eyes widened as he quickly looked around. Tables, people, normal conversations—nothing seemed out of place. His fingers trembled slightly as he typed, “How do you know that?” The reply came instantly. “I told you… I notice things.” This wasn’t just strange anymore. It felt unsettling. “Are you watching me?” he asked. A few seconds later, her reply came: “Would it scare you if I said yes?” Alex’s grip on his phone tightened. His heartbeat increased as he scanned the café again. A girl near the window, a couple talking softly, a man reading a book—everything looked normal, yet nothing felt right. “This isn’t funny,” he typed. “I’m not joking.” Silence filled his mind. Was she serious? Or was she just playing with him? He leaned back, trying to stay calm. “Then where are you?” he asked. No reply came. A moment later, his phone vibrated again. “Relax. If I wanted to scare you, I would have done it already.” That didn’t make him feel any better. “Then what do you want?” he asked. After a long pause, her reply came: “I just want to talk to you.” After everything, that was her answer. “You could have said that normally,” he replied. “Normal is boring,” she answered. Alex shook his head slightly. Even now, she sounded calm—almost playful. “You’re strange,” he typed. “And you still keep replying.” She wasn’t wrong. “Maybe I shouldn’t,” he typed. There was a noticeable delay before her reply came: “Then stop.” Alex stared at the screen. He could stop. He could end everything right now. But he didn’t. “I didn’t say I would,” he replied. “I know.” Something shifted inside him. Minutes passed as they continued talking. The tension slowly faded, replaced by a strange sense of comfort. “You overthink everything,” she said. “You say strange things,” he replied. “And yet… you’re still here.” For a brief moment, Alex smiled. Then suddenly, another message appeared. “Alex…” His smile faded. Something about it felt serious again. “You were right earlier.” “About what?” he asked. After a short pause, her reply came. “You shouldn’t trust me.” His chest tightened. “Why?” The typing dots appeared… disappeared… then appeared again. Finally— “Because I’m closer to you than you think.” Alex froze. Slowly, his eyes lifted from the screen. And for the first time… He didn’t just feel confused. He felt scared.
