Chapter Seven: Exposed
The air between the three of us was thick with tension, and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as Liam’s smirk deepened. His eyes darted between Alexander and me, and the realization that he had pieced everything together made my stomach twist.
“Right about what?” I managed to ask, forcing my voice to remain steady.
Liam’s smirk widened. “Oh, don’t play coy, Sophia. It’s all starting to make sense now. The distant looks, the awkward avoidance… And now, you’re here, dressed to impress, on his arm.”
Alexander stepped forward, his broad frame imposing. “Liam, that’s enough.”
“Is it?” Liam shot back, his voice rising slightly. “Because I think I deserve to know the truth. Are you two—” He paused, his face contorting with disbelief. “Are you seeing each other?”
I froze, my breath catching in my throat. My mind raced for an explanation, but nothing I could say would erase the obvious truth.
Alexander’s voice cut through the silence. “Liam, this isn’t the time or place for this conversation.”
“Then when?” Liam snapped. His voice cracked with anger and something deeper—betrayal. “How long has this been going on? Did it start when we were together, Sophia? Is that why you ended things?”
“That’s not what happened,” I said quickly, my voice trembling.
“Oh? Then explain it to me,” Liam demanded, his eyes blazing. “Because from where I’m standing, it looks like my father swooped in and stole the woman I was in love with.”
Alexander’s jaw tightened, and his hand found the small of my back, a silent gesture of support. “Liam, I won’t let you stand here and insult her,” he said, his voice firm. “Whatever issues you have, you can take them up with me. But this conversation is over.”
Liam stared at him, his chest rising and falling with barely contained rage. “You think this is over? You think I’m just going to walk away? You don’t even know the meaning of betrayal, Dad.”
With that, he stormed off, leaving Alexander and me standing in the middle of the ballroom, surrounded by curious onlookers.
The car ride home was silent, the weight of the evening pressing down on both of us. Alexander’s jaw was set, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly as he navigated through the city streets.
“I’m sorry,” I said finally, breaking the silence.
He glanced at me, his expression softening. “You have nothing to apologize for. Liam’s reaction is on him, not you.”
I nodded, but the guilt still gnawed at me. “He’s your son, Alexander. I never wanted to come between the two of you.”
He sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly. “Liam and I have had our issues long before you came into the picture, Sophia. This is just another layer of it.”
“But it’s different now,” I said quietly. “I’m pregnant with your child. How are we supposed to navigate this when everything feels so complicated?”
Alexander reached over, his hand finding mine. “One step at a time,” he said, his voice steady. “We’ll face it together, Sophia. No matter what happens.”
Later that night, as I lay in bed, I replayed the evening in my mind. Liam’s words echoed in my head, and the look of betrayal on his face was impossible to forget.
I turned over, staring at the empty space beside me. The warmth of Alexander’s presence lingered, even though he wasn’t there. The memory of his touch, his kiss, his unwavering support was a comfort I clung to.
But the uncertainty of the future loomed large. How would Liam’s anger affect Alexander? How would the public react if they found out about us? And most importantly, how would this all impact the child I was carrying?
The next morning, I was startled by a knock at my door. I hesitated before opening it, my heart racing when I saw Liam standing on the other side.
“What are you doing here?” I asked, my voice guarded.
“I need answers,” he said, his tone devoid of the anger from the night before.
I stepped aside reluctantly, allowing him to enter. He paced the living room, running a hand through his hair as he struggled to find the words.
“Why him, Sophia?” he asked finally, turning to face me. “Of all people, why my father?”
“It wasn’t planned,” I said softly. “I didn’t know who he was when we first met. It just… happened.”
Liam’s expression twisted with disbelief. “It just happened? That’s your explanation?”
“I never meant to hurt you, Liam,” I said, my voice breaking. “But things between us ended for a reason. You and I weren’t meant to be.”
“And you think you’re meant to be with him?” he shot back, his voice rising again. “You think this is going to end well for you?”
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. “I don’t know how this will end. But I know how I feel, and I know that Alexander is willing to stand by me, no matter what.”
Liam stared at me for a long moment, his eyes searching mine. Finally, he shook his head. “You’re making a mistake, Sophia. And when it all falls apart, don’t expect me to be there to pick up the pieces.”
With that, he turned and left, slamming the door behind him.
