Chapter Five: Crossing Boundaries
The days after Alexander left my apartment were a whirlwind of emotions.
Every time I tried to concentrate on anything, my mind inevitably drifted back to him. The way he had kissed me-soft, teasing, and yet so full of promise-left me tangled in a web of desire and uncertainty.
I had convinced myself that the night we shared was nothing more than a mistake, a result of the chaos in my life, but that kiss... that kiss had stirred something deeper within me.
I kept telling myself I had to focus on the pregnancy-on the future-but there was no denying how much Alexander's presence had affected me. And what made it worse was the nagging guilt. He was Liam's father. The man who had broken my heart, the man who I thought I had moved on from. How could I even consider letting Alexander into my life, especially after what had happened between us?
But every time I looked into his eyes, I knew it wasn't that simple.
Two days after Alexander's visit, I ran into Liam again, this time at the café near my office. He was sitting at a corner table, a smug grin spreading across his face when he saw me approach. I tried to ignore him, but he was quick to call me over.
"Hey, Sophia," he said, his voice dripping with mock sweetness. "You look.. well. I was wondering if you had a minute."
hesitated, then reluctantly pulled out the chair across from him. "What is it, Liam?"
"You're avoiding me," he said bluntly, his gaze sharp. "And it's starting to make me curious."
I froze. "I'm not avoiding you."
"You sure about that? Because the last time I saw you, you were with my dad.
Alexander Steele. The man you're apparently not avoiding," he added, his voice laced with mockery.
I cursed under my breath. Liam's suspicions were growing, and I could feel the walls closing in on me. What if he figured it out?
forced a smile. "I'm just busy, that's all."
"You sure about that?" He leaned in, his gaze narrowing. "Something's going on, Sophia. And I'm going to find out what."
stood abruptly, unable to keep my composure any longer. "Liam, this is none of your business."
But he wasn't done. "You think you're so clever, don't you? Playing these games with my father, but trust me, l'll get to the bottom of it."
Ileft him with those words hanging in the air, my heart pounding.
The following week passed in a blur. Work was becoming increasingly difficult to focus on, and every time my phone buzzed with a message from Alexander, my heart would skip a beat. He hadn't pushed me, but he was there, in the background, offering his support, checking in on me. I couldn't deny that it felt comforting.
We spoke less often about the pregnancy than I expected. Instead, Alexander and I began to talk about everything else--the little details of our lives, things we never had the chance to discuss before. Still, there was this unspoken tension between us, an undeniable pull that seemed to be drawing us closer.
One evening, I found myself texting him.
The message was simple, but the moment I hit send, I regretted it.
Can we meet?
I didn't expect an immediate response, but within minutes, my phone buzzed again.
I'll be there in an hour.
was all I needed. Just his words were enough to send my heart racing.
An hour later, I was standing in the lobby of my building, waiting for Alexander. When he arrived, it wasn't like the first time we met-there was no grand, dramatic entrance, no electrifying first kiss. Instead, we met as two people who were beginning to come to terms with something far more complicated than either of us had ever anticipated.
"Sophia," he greeted me quietly, his eyes scanning my face as if trying to read the unspoken thoughts swirling in my head.
"Alexander," I replied, forcing a smile.
He stepped closer, his presence commanding as usual. "How are you?"
It was a simple question, but it held so much weight. How was I supposed to answer? How was I supposed to explain the rollercoaster of emotions I had been riding?
"I'm... still trying to figure that out," | admitted, my voice trembling slightly.
Alexander nodded, his hand brushing mine briefly before he led me toward the elevator. "Let's talk," he said, his voice gentle yet firm.
When we entered my apartment, I could feel the weight of the air between us.
Alexander sat on the couch, his fingers lightly tapping on the armrest as he glanced over at me. I stood across the room, unsure of how to begin.
" don't want this to be complicated, Sophia," he said, his voice quiet. " don't want to be just the guy who you have a baby with. I want to be there for you, for everything. But I also need to know that you're on the same page."
I sucked in a breath. "I don't know if I can be on the same page. I'm scared,
Alexander. I'm scared of how everything has changed so fast."
He stood, crossing the room to stand before me. His hands cupped my face gently, his touch sending an electric pulse through my veins. "You don't have to be afraid. We'll do this at your pace, but I want you to know that I'm not going anywhere."
Before I could respond, his lips crashed onto mine, seizing my breath. The kiss was urgent, filled with a hunger I hadn't anticipated. The world around us seemed to disappear, and all that existed was him-his heat, his passion, his determination.
My hands found their way to his chest, feeling the rapid beat of his heart beneath my fingertips. My body responded to his touch like it had been waiting for this moment-desperate, eager, craving more.
His hands slid down my back, pulling me against him, and my breath hitched. He was everything I had tried to avoid-everything I knew I shouldn't want-but I couldn't help it. I wanted him, desperately.
"Are you sure about this?" he murmured against my lips, his breath hot on my skin.
I hesitated, but only for a moment. "Yes," | breathed out, giving in to the desire that had been simmering between us.
We crossed the line together, our bodies entwining in a dance of passion that neither of us could resist.
