Tensions Rise

Chapter Eleven: Tensions Rise The days after my meeting with Victoria passed in a blur of tension and uncertainty. The storm that had been brewing finally broke, and everything I thought I knew about my world seemed to shift around me. The media circus surrounding me and Alexander only escalated, with each headline more lurid than the last. I could almost feel the weight of the public’s gaze, pressing on me from all sides. Still, Alexander remained a steady presence in my life. Each time the weight of the world seemed unbearable, he was there, his arms offering the comfort and reassurance I so desperately needed. But even his strength couldn’t shield me from everything. It started with a phone call. Alexander’s voice was tight with barely concealed frustration when I answered. “Sophia, I need you to come to the office today. The board’s pushing back. They want to meet with you.” I froze, my heart thudding in my chest. “What do you mean, ‘meet with me’?” “The board wants to meet with the woman who’s causing the chaos. You.” His voice softened. “I’ll be there. But you need to be prepared.” I swallowed hard, the knot in my stomach tightening. I hadn’t expected things to go this far. But when you’re a part of a billionaire family, with so much on the line, the stakes are higher than you ever realize until it’s too late. When I arrived at the towering Steele Corporation building, the grand glass doors seemed to loom over me like a fortress. The sleek, sterile lobby was busy with people moving in and out, but it felt like I was stepping into a world that wasn’t mine. My heels clicked sharply on the marble floors as I made my way to the elevator. By the time I reached Alexander’s office, the tension had settled in my chest like a cold weight. As the elevator doors slid open, I was greeted by Alexander’s assistant, who led me straight to the large conference room where the board members were already seated. The room fell silent as I entered. The board members—mostly older men and women in dark suits—gave me cold, calculating stares. Alexander was seated at the head of the table, his presence commanding and powerful, but even he seemed unsettled. “You’ve met with the media, Mrs. Johnson,” one of the board members began, his voice sharp. “You’ve made your relationship with Mr. Steele public. Do you understand the ramifications of your actions?” I squared my shoulders, meeting their cold stares. “I understand. I never intended to disrupt the company or cause harm, but I won’t apologize for my relationship with Alexander. I’m not going anywhere, and neither is the baby.” Another board member, an older woman with steely gray eyes, chimed in. “Do you understand what this could do to the Steele brand? To the company’s reputation? People are already calling into question your role in Alexander’s decisions. His public image is being questioned, and that affects the bottom line.” I fought to keep my voice steady. “I’m not here to undermine the company, but I’m not going to allow anyone to make me feel like I’m a liability simply because I’m pregnant with his child.” Alexander’s hand rested on the table in front of him, and I could see the muscles in his jaw tightening as he clenched his teeth. “Sophia is my priority. You need to accept that.” His voice was firm, unwavering. One of the board members, a tall man with a sharp jawline, spoke up. “We don’t have a choice in this, Alexander. If you continue down this path, we’ll have no choice but to distance ourselves from you. We need to preserve the company’s reputation.” The words hung in the air like a death sentence. I could see Alexander’s anger rising, his eyes darkening as he leaned forward in his seat. “You can’t tell me who I can love. I’ve worked hard to build this company, and I’ll be damned if anyone—especially you—tries to tear my family apart.” The room was filled with silence for a long moment before one of the board members spoke again. “Then I guess we’ll be seeing what the shareholders think. But make no mistake, Alexander, you’re walking a fine line. We all are.” The meeting dissolved soon after, but the tension in the air remained thick. As Alexander and I left the conference room, I could feel the weight of the decisions ahead bearing down on both of us. That evening, we sat together in his penthouse, the city lights twinkling outside the windows, a stark contrast to the turmoil we felt. Alexander leaned back against the couch, his hands folded tightly in front of him. I could tell he was wrestling with the same fears I had—about the board’s decision, the pressure, and how it would all affect our future. “I’m sorry you had to go through that,” he said quietly, his eyes searching mine. “I never wanted this to happen to you.” I shook my head, reaching for his hand. “We’re in this together. We always have been.” I squeezed his hand gently, offering a smile I didn’t fully feel. “We’ll get through it.” Alexander met my gaze, his eyes softening. “I’ve always known you were strong. But I don’t want you to face this alone. I can protect you, Sophia. And I will. I won’t let anyone tear us apart.” I could feel the sincerity in his words, and for a moment, I allowed myself to believe that it would be enough. That no matter what happened, we could stand strong against everything the world threw our way. Liam Strikes Again But just as I was beginning to feel some semblance of peace, the phone rang. It was an unknown number, but something about it sent a chill down my spine. I answered, my breath catching in my throat. “Hello?” “Sophia,” Liam’s voice came through, dark and menacing. “I warned you. I gave you the chance to walk away from my father. And now, you’re going to pay for it.” The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end. “Liam,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “What are you talking about?” “You’ll see soon enough,” he said with a laugh that didn’t reach his eyes. “You’ll regret this, I promise you.” Before I could respond, he hung up, leaving me with a sense of dread creeping over me. I immediately called Alexander, my heart pounding. “Liam just called,” I said quickly, trying to keep my voice calm. “He’s threatening me again. And this time, it feels different. Like he’s ready to take things further.” “Don’t worry, Sophia,” Alexander’s voice was firm. “I won’t let him hurt you. I’ll handle it.” As the days passed, the tension only seemed to grow. Liam’s threats hung over us, and while Alexander did everything he could to reassure me, the worry gnawed at me every minute. What if this time Liam went too far? What if his vendetta destroyed everything we were trying to build? Despite my fear, one thing became clear: I would stand by Alexander, no matter what.
