Chapter 32

1763 Words
Tomorrow would be the day I was marrying superstar Layla Owens. I could hardly sleep that night due to the excitement, though it was partly because I was not used to the new place yet. I woke up right on time at seven the next day. I had to run a few circles around my district to burn some of the nervous energy and excitement I was feeling. Despite the effort, I still could not calm down. After I was done with my run, I returned home for a shower. Layla called me around ten. “Come out now. I’m at the entrance of the district you’re staying in. Remember to put on a baseball cap and sunglasses before you leave the house.” I was slightly speechless at Layla’s instructions. “You’re the superstar, not me. Do I need to go to such an extent?” “If you plan on marrying me, just follow my instructions. I’m in the black commercial Mercedes Benz parked right outside your district.” “Alright. I’m heading out now.” I put on a pair of sunglasses and a baseball cap as Layla had instructed and left the house. … The first thing I spotted after leaving the district was the completely tinted commercial Mercedes parked outside. There was no need to guess. It had to be this car. I knocked on the door and slipped into the car. Layla looked very pretty today. She was wearing a long white dress. She was not wearing any makeup, but she still looked radiant. I got quite excited at the thought of her becoming my wife from today onward. “So, where will we be getting married later?” I asked. “Right in the car.” “In the car?” I was surprised. Layla turned to the person in the front at this point. “Mr. Cook, my fiancé is here. We can go ahead and get married now.” “He’s here?” The man called Mr. Cook sized me up with a surprised look in his eyes. I could see the doubt in his eyes. It was clear that he did not expect superstar Layla Owens to be marrying an ordinary man like me rather than some well-known millionaire. “What sort of look is that in your eyes?” I was not happy with the way he was looking at me, so I spoke up. “I’m sorry. I apologize for being rude.” Mr. Cook quickly apologized. I ignored him and turned to Layla. “Are we getting married here instead of a public office? Can we really get it done here?” This is the first time I had heard of such a service being offered. “I had to get Mr. Cook here because of my sensitive status. It’s not suitable for me to be out in public.” “Miss Owens, it is our honor to be able to help you with your marriage registration,” Mr. Cook said, attempting to get into her good graces. “Now, please allow me to take a simple photograph of both of you. Could I trouble you two to get closer?” … After more than ten minutes of bustling about, our marriage was now official. The next thing we had to do was to enter our information online, and our marriage certificate would be official. I was in a slight daze as I stared at the marriage certificate in my hand. Everything felt like a dream to me. Superstar Layla Owens was now my wife? Two weeks ago, I was nothing but a penniless loser everyone hated, and now, I actually had the most beautiful woman in the world as my wife? I pinched myself hard on the thigh. It really hurt. I was not dreaming… I smiled. I could not help but smile widely. Right at that moment, Layla turned coldly to me. “Now that we’re done with registering our marriage, you can get out of the car. I’ll contact you again if there’s anything I need.” “You want me to get out of the car now? Shouldn’t we be celebrating?” This was a marriage, after all. Even if it was a contract marriage, we should still celebrate to mark the occasion, right? “That’s not necessary. I have to rush to a work engagement for tomorrow, and I need to leave in a while. Remember to keep your phone on for 24 hours a day.” Layla’s tone was a monotone, and there was no sign of emotion in it. “Wait. Even if this is a contract marriage, we should still have a house together even if we aren’t celebrating the occasion, right?” This did not feel like a marriage to me if we had nothing but a certificate. “We can talk about that in the future. I really need to leave now.” She glared at me. “Alright, alright. I’ll get out of the car, alright?” Even though I wanted to be with her a little longer, it was pointless for me to linger when she had already voiced her intentions. So, I pushed the door open and got out. Before I could even say goodbye to her, the car sped off. “Sigh, you really don’t like me at all.” I felt a little upset as I watched the commercial Mercedes drive off. To be honest, I had only met her just a few times. It was normal that she did not like me at all. Moreover, we had a misunderstanding the first time we met. She must think I was a p*****t who enjoyed sleeping around with girls in washrooms. I was quite troubled at this thought… It would be difficult to change this terrible impression she had of me. I sighed and stuffed the marriage certificate into the deepest corner of my school bag. I then headed to school. … By the time I arrived at the classroom, the second class was about to start. My classmates were all seated and were deep in discussion about the latest gossip. I glanced at them and noticed Nadia was back. She glared at me furiously when she noticed me looking at her… The hatred on her face was clear. It looked like she wanted to skin me alive. I was not bothered as I smiled at her and went to my seat. “Freddie, Freddie. Where did you go the entire morning? How dare you skip our class teacher’s lesson this morning! Are you looking to fail?” Chris leaned toward me the moment I sat down. “Nothing major happened. I just went to the Department of Civil Affairs and got married since I was already there.” I made a half-serious joke. “Got married since you were already there?” Chris laughed. “Just say that you overslept if you did. Who are you trying to trick into believing you got married? Tell me, then, who did you marry?” “Layla Owens, of course.” “Layla Owens? To be honest, Freddie, I married her in my dream last night too,” Chris laughed as he said. It was obvious that he did not believe me. “Shut up and get out of here. You’re not allowed to have such dreams. She’s mine.” I scolded him angrily. “Alright, alright. I’ll let you have her on account that you brought me to her concert.” “By the way, did anything happen in school recently?” I changed the topic. “Nothing much. There’s only Lina’s upcoming live stream. The news blew up, and she’s super popular right now. Her fanbase has grown to over a hundred thousand in just the past few days,” Chris said. “More than a hundred thousand? Isn’t she just planning to unveil the identity of Gentle Heart? Are there that many people interested in this?” I was shocked. “Of course people are interested. This is a mega-rich guy who’s throwing a lot of money around, the richest guy on the platform right now… Everyone wants to get to know him and get into his good books. Even Cutie Pie Montana has no idea who Gentle Heart is. It’s a pretty great achievement for Lina to be able to ask him to reveal him! Even I’m curious about who Gentle Heart really is.” “Are you?” I was surprised. This had just been an unintentional move of mine. I had made Lina more popular. It was nothing I should be bothered about, anyway. The higher she climbed, the harder she would fall. Lina was about to get her just desserts… I logged into the streaming app at this thought and went online to have a look. The moment I got online, a notification for 999+ messages popped up on the message icon. Different live streamers were madly trying to add me as a friend. This time, it was not limited to female streamers. There were also male streamers included in the mix, and they were asking me if I liked men. I was pretty disgusted by all this. I went to the permission settings to block all friend requests and later read the message Lina sent to me. Lina had sent me three messages while I was offline the past two days. “Young Master Heart, are you there? Hope I can see you soon.” “Young Master Heart, can I call you Gentle Heart? I would feel closer to you this way.” “Gentle Heart, what should I wear when we see each other on Monday?” “Gentle Heart, are you online now?” The last message had just been delivered to me. Since she was online, I decided to chat with her. “Yup, I’m online. I’d like to see you soon too. Actually, I would prefer it if you wore nothing.” “You’re so naughty. How about dropping by my channel, since you’re online? I’ll be live streaming in a while.” She sincerely invited me. I agreed since I had nothing to do. I received her streaming notification a few minutes later. When I entered her stream, I rewarded her with a spaceship. “Thank you. Thank you Gentle Heart for gifting me a spaceship!” Lina happily expressed her gratitude. The number of viewers began rising right after I rewarded her, and it was not long before the number passed fifty thousand!
